While Americans celebrated U.S. history on the Fourth of July, a company in Spain celebrated an historic moment for the solar industry: Torresol’s 19.9 megawatt (MW) concentrating solar power plant became the first ever to generate uninterrupted electricity for 24 hours straight. The plant uses a Power Tower design which features a field of 2,650 mirrors that concen- trate sunlight onto a boiler in a central receiver tower. The plant also utilizes molten salt as a heat transfer fluid that allows it to generate electricity when there’s no sunlight. Recharge News reported on the milestone: After commissioning in May, the plant was finally ready to operate at full-blast in late June and benefited from a particularly sunny stretch of weather, according to Diego Ramirez, director of pro- duction at Torresol. “The high performance of the installations coincided with several days of excellent solar radiation, which made it possible for the hot-salt storage tank to reach full capacity,” Ramirez explains. Torresol says that the plant will provide electricity for about 20 hours each day on average, with numerous days in the summer seeing 24 hours of supply. How does that compare with a similar-sized photovoltaic plant? The 21.2 MW Solarpark Calaveron in Spain generates about 40 gigawatt hours (GWh) a year. This smaller 19.9 MW Power Tower Plant will generate about 110 GWh per year. www.torresolenergy.com RenewableEnergyWorld.com6 24 Hour Solar Power positively newsworthy

The hidden economic value of the UK’s natural environment has been highlighted and quantifi ed in a ‘ground- breaking’ new report. Nature is worth tens of billions of pounds a year in ben- efi ts to wellbeing in the UK, according to the fi rst extensive fi nancial assessment of the environment. Our quality of life, health and economic prosperity are crucially dependent on our natural world, its dif- ferent ecosystems and its biodiversity, according to the UK National Ecosystem Assessment (UK NEA). Published on June 2nd by the UK government, the report provides “a new way of estimating our national wealth” and represents the fi rst time any country in the world has quantifi ed the eco- nomic, health and social benefi ts of its ecosystems in monetary terms. 500 experts in ecology, econom- ics and social sciences calculated the value that habitats across the nation, from mountains to cities, moors to woodland and lakes to coastlines, add to the economy each year. They assessed the worth of “ecosystem services,” such as how the natural world supports the basic infrastructure of life, removes pol- lution from the air and provides cultural benefi ts through spaces for recreation or places that offer “an enhanced sense of spiritual wellbeing.” Pollinators, such as bees, are worth £430m per year to British agri- culture, while lakes, rivers and other wetlands provide £1.5bn of benefi ts to water quality. Living with a view of a green space creates £300 worth of health benefi ts per person per year. These and other “non-market benefi ts” of nature have not previously been taken into account, the report states. Valuing them properly will enable better decision making in areas such as development, transport, agriculture and energy. The Department of Food and Rural Affairs (Defa) said that the report strengthens the argument for protecting and enhancing the environment and will be used by the government to direct future policy. uknea.unep-wcmc.org UK mental health charity Mind has always campaigned for greater under- standing of mental health issues. Now, through an experimental new project, Dave Urwin is using the therapeutic benefi ts of nature to help people with mental health problems. The Go Wild, Stay Well initiative is taking place across a variety of nature reserves in the Quantocks and Blackdown Hills. Urwin explains: “It is a collabora- tion with Somerset Wildlife Trust, and during each session an employee of theirs will take the participants for a walk around the reserve, explaining about the different species of fl ora and fauna they see.” Urwin has also recently led the Walk on the Wild Side challenge; a fund- raising activity that saw 5 participants complete a 30 mile walk on the Quan- tocks, with 11 more joining them at the halfway point. Through their combined efforts, the participants raised just over £4,000, an achievement that Urwin admits was both incredibly rewarding and empowering in light of his own past battles with depression. “On the day there was a wonder- ful sense of camaraderie,” remembers Urwin, “everyone completed the chal- lenge and the weather was kind to us. The walk was through stunning scenery, and allowed people from different walks of life to join together and share a powerful sense of achievement through a common goal.” Mind also have a project entitled Grow Well, which is in partnership with the Langley House Trust, and enables people experiencing mental distress to take part in horticultural activities.” The projects are examples of eco- therapy, where the therapeutic benefi ts of nature are used to help relieve anxiety. Project manager Dave Topham explains however that ecotherapy is, “just a posh way of saying, ‘Get out into the natural environment, do something physical and you’ll feel better about yourself.’ It’s not complicated, but it’s very effective.” www.bmycharity.com/walkonthewildside www.mindtws.org.uk/gowildstaywell.htm Go Wild, Stay Well Nature’s Wealth

8 Synchrodestiny By Suzi von Mensenkampff The last 7 years have been an incredible journey for me which really kicked off when a friend gave me a present of Deepak Chopra’s The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. I had just set up my own business and was both excited and terrifi ed. He also introduced me to set- ting goals and affi rmations and using visualization techniques (I was like his guinea pig). It was amazing how easily opportunities came my way and how I began to transform from a wine drinking, smoking, crazy working mum to a calm, happy, peaceful, optimistic, loving being. I think Deepak Chopra and Eckhart Tolle’s books provided me with huge inspiration, along with an incredible Yoga teacher with whom I learned meditation and mindfulness. But I guess they were my guides, and it was something that happened within me that really created the change that has transformed my life. Reading Siobhan’s article has inspired me to take a leaf out of her book and become “even more diligent about my thoughts and visualization.” It also “reminded me to trust the Universe and stop trying to control the outcome.” We need to hear lots more Siobhan McKenna stories. Although, I must say, I think there is a huge positive surge of optimism among people who are now beginning to look within themselves for inspiration and are creating changes in their lives. Look at the allotments cropping up everywhere and everyone growing veg, becoming more energy effi cient, recycling materials and looking after this incredible island on which we live…at last! There are days when I feel like I’ve won the Lotto of Life, and I thank the Universe every day. Even when things seem diffi cult or painful, I know that every cloud has a “silver lining”. www.inblueinteriors.com 8 Competition Winner Last issue we asked people to send in their own Positive Irish News stories to win a copy of Siobhan McKenna’s new book The Lingerie Designer. Above is one of our winning stories. Leaps of Faith A UK-based performance company is showcasing the talents of young Colombians that have risen from the streets and forged a career in the arts thanks to a unique circus school. Hailed as a groundbreaking social project, Circolombia returned to London’s Roundhouse theatre for a string of performances in April of this year, marking a promising year ahead for the Colombian circus troupe of 17–28 year-olds. The second run of their show, Urban, was as raw and explosive as its 2010 premiere. Dare-devil stunts and incredible acrobatics were performed against a backdrop of Cali, Western Colombia, home to the company’s humble beginnings. The idea for the performance came from the personal stories of each artist, says José Henry Caycedo Casierra. “It is a small showcase of the lives that each one of us has lived in the past – such as gang members, the madman of the ghetto or the recycler – which in some way are the spirit of the neighbourhood,” José explains. Giving something back is a lesson woven into the fi re and attitude of Urban, a message Circolombia hopes will go global. www.circolombia.com www.urban-circolombia.com Bolivia is to become the fi rst country in the world to give Nature comprehensive legal rights. Developed by grassroots social groups and agreed by politicians, the Law of Mother Earth recognises the rights of all living things, giving the natu- ral world equal status to human beings. Once fully approved, the legisla- tion will provide the Earth with rights to: life and regeneration; biodiversity and freedom from genetic modifi cation; pure water; clean air; naturally balanced systems; restoration from the effects of human activity; and freedom from contamination. The legislation is based on broader principles of living in harmony with the Earth and prioritising the “collective good.” At its heart is an understanding that the Earth is sacred, which arises from the indigenous Andean worldview of ‘Pachamama’ (mean- ing Mother Earth) as a living being. Bolivia’s government will be legally bound to prioritise the wellbeing of its citizens and the natural world by developing policies that promote sustainability and control industry. The economy must operate within the limits of nature and the country is to work towards energy and food sovereignty while adopting renewable energy technologies and increasing energy effi ciency. Following a change in Bolivia’s constitution in 2009, the law is part of a complete overhaul of the legal system. It represents a shift away from the western development model to a more holistic vision, based on the indigenous concept of Vivir Bien (to live well). The proposal for the law states: “Living Well means adopting forms of consumption, behaviour and conduct that are not degrading to nature. It requires an ethical and spiritual rela- tionship with life. Living Well proposes the complete fulfi lment of life and collective happiness.” Law of Mother Earth

spirituality & the city “A Moment That Changed My Life” Eoin Lynch Producer 10 years ago I was in Bali, surfing. I had surfed before, but never waves that big. It didn’t take long for me to realise that what I was doing was very stupid. I felt a wave behind me, started paddling and the next thing I knew I was in the water being tossed around like a doll in a washing machine. When I did make it to the surface, another wave came crashing down on top of me. The whole process happened 6 times, and each time I became more and more exhausted. My body was heavy and I couldn’t move my limbs so I simply and calmly began to sink. At this point, a 15 year old Balinese surfer jumped off his board, pulled me up to the surface and out of the surf, onto the beach. I have since learnt that, utterly exhausted or not, you can always find the strength. The key is to be aware of the things that make life worth living. www.lynchcreative.ie Konstantin Nikolov Freelance Animator Have you noticed that sometimes things happen to us at exactly the right moment? Like a door that opens quite rarely, but this time you managed to walk through it at the exact time it opened, and that changed your life in some mysterious way. My greatest change so far happened to me following this pattern. It was a very special book that chose to come into my life at the moment when I needed it most. The book is called “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, and its messages brought the magic back into my life. It helped me remember that miracles only need us to believe in them to hap- pen, and that the uncertainty of life is only the blank page of limitless possibility. That happened nearly seven years ago and it was the push I needed to start chasing my dreams and to be where I am today. Zara Petrova Project Coordinator I have been living in Ireland for a few years now. My friends in Bulgaria were a very important part of my life and I really missed them even though my life here was great. For a little while I didn’t know how to deal with the way I felt... until I got to talk to a friend in Ireland who changed my perspective on my problems. She had more to be unhappy about than I did. However, she is one of the most positive people I know. It was then when I realised that only I am responsible for my own happiness. Since then, I started making much more effort and I consider- ably improved my social life. I also keep in touch with my friends in Bulgaria and visit them as often as I can. I am now much happier with my life as I know that it is Me who can make Me happy.

Igor Olivier Ezendam Overtone Artist & Teacher Listening to the radio one night in the late 80’s and hearing a vocal group, David Hykes and his Harmonic Choir, playing at the Amsterdam Melkveg. It was their first album, “Hearing Solar Winds.” They sounded like an airplane taking off, when suddenly one guy leapt out, into the stratosphere, with no parachute. It was a mind-blowing first encounter with overtone singing. I can remember grabbing an audio-cassette of classical music that belonged to my mother and pressing REC. Not caring about any repercus- sions, just wanting to capture this amazing sound. I would listen to the tape for many years to come. This introduction to harmonics started me practising and practising, working on my own vocal voyage. 20 years later, I am now a professional overtone artist. I teach, make recordings and give solo concerts of overtone singing with didgeridoo, percussion and string instruments providing a world musical experience. www.feelingsound.com Mari Kennedy Yoga Teacher & Transformational Coach When I was 28, my boyfriend at the time handed me a cassette tape and said “You need this - its Yoga.” Then he told me to lie on the ground, to “listen and follow.” As I lay there laughing at the thought of needing yoga, a haunting, kind of annoying but vaguely soothing voice suggested I “become aware of my breath .” Of course, I didn’t get to the end of the tape that night - I had too much to do, and its slowness agitated me. Months later, I found myself voluntarily on the ground following that haunting voice. And so began my relationship with a 4,000 year old tradition that has held me, opened me and lead me home to myself. That moment of Grace offered me a practice that has transformed my life and shown me that our natural state is limitless freedom and overflowing wellbeing, and that changes everything. www.transformationalspace.com Kate O’Reilly Photographer & School Director I always wanted to make a living from a creative art, and a moment that changed my life is when I did. I decided to become a serious photographer, constantly in search of the magic of life and people. Photography for me now is quite a revelational experience when what I am looking for is achieved. We all have cameras, we all take photographs - but what are we searching for? As Ansel Adams once said, “The photograph comes from within.” Photography for me is pure magic and a very powerful tool for self expression. My mentor, Colin Beard, a true master of photog- raphy, taught me these things. We opened up a photog- raphy school together and now we help others to realise their creative talents through this medium. www.photolearning.com.au 11

PAULA DUGGAN DIP. NT. CHEK. EXERCISE COACH, EKI, NDEFE, MIANT CNM Graduate 2008 I travelled extensively through Australia and New Zealand over a couple of years. During my travels, it became clear to me that other cultures prioritise their own health and wellbeing much more than we do here in Ireland. Abroad, I found it so much easier to eat well, no matter where I went. I enjoyed the benefits of eating so well, and found myself feeling positive and energised. I was meeting so many people who were aware of the impact of food and exercise on wellness. I also had the opportunity to work in a health cafe which promoted wholesome fresh produce. All of this inspired me to embark upon a career in nutrition and fitness. When I returned to Ireland, I enrolled in a 3 year diploma course with CNM. I thoroughly enjoyed the training. It was the catalyst for me to start my own business as a Nutritional Therapist and Personal Trainer. I really love my work. I get to help people on a really fundamental level. A lot of my work is about education and inspiration. I focus on getting people to realise how wonderful they can feel when they follow a nutrient dense diet and make exercise a part of their lives. I respond to each client individually, depending on their needs. Many report an improved quality of life and increased confidence and energy. AVRIL LANE-WATSON BSC. DIP.NAT. DIP.AC. CNM Graduate 2005 Owner of Cara Clinic, Tipperary I have always felt that there is a preor- dained path that we are born to follow. I qualified originally as a teacher, moving into remedial education. I really enjoyed this, but I came from a family where there were doctors and dieticians and I had always been fascinated by medicine. In the late 90’s, my mum became ill with breast cancer, and this was a huge turning point in my life. She suffered a lot, but at that time there was no gen- eral awareness of how complementary approaches could have helped alleviate her suffering. It was only in 2001, after she had passed away that I really decided to become a practitioner, to learn as much about natural medicine as possible and to really focus on how it can relieve suffering. I trained as an Acupuncturist and a Naturopath at CNM. Acupuncture is so powerful for pain relief and the Naturopa- thy tools help empower the patient to help themselves. I love running my own practice and being able to help people, and cannot imagine doing anything else. I love seeing the results as people respond to treatment, the light coming back into their eyes, pain intensity and frequency reducing over time, hope coming back. I give a lot, but receive so much back. ROISIN O’KELLY RN. DIP. NAT. DIP. HERB CNM Graduate 2003 Owner of Breath of Life Clinic, Dublin Initially, my career was in nursing. I worked as a children’s nurse, general nurse and midwife for over 15 years. I always loved my job. I was working in Temple Street Intensive Care Unit when our first son Ciaran came along. At 6 weeks, out of nowhere, he developed severe eczema. 12 Positive Life-Change CNM, the College of Naturopathic Medicine, interviewed four people who changed their lives to work in natural medicine, asking them why they made the change and if they are happy that they did.

We tried everything, emollients, steroid creams, antihistamines, antibiotics…all to no avail. We explored dietary change, cotton clothes, non-biological washing powders, still with no improvement. At the age of 12 years, his skin was worse than ever. A very prayerful person suggested we start him on Complex Homeopathy. Within 24 hours, there was a dramatic improvement. Within 1 week, his skin was clear for the first time in his life. This experience encouraged me to resign there and then, as a nurse, and begin my lifelong study of Natural Heal- ing. I embarked upon the Naturopathy/ Herbal Medicine training at CNM. I am so glad I made the change. Each day is an adventure, each day I learn more. It is hard work but a great challenge. Every day, in my clinic, I see miracles which raise my spirits and give me joy. In recent weeks, a couple, who had previously been infertile, brought their beautiful new baby to meet us; a patient, who had been obese, came to visit, slim and trim after a long battle with his weight; an infant with a chronic respira- tory infection showed huge improvement; a cancer patient, who had been suffering badly, reported feeling much better. My work is very worthwhile. I feel I make a difference in peoples lives. RORY HAFFORD MSC MEDICAL SCIENCE, ND, DIP AC, DIP PSYCH CNM Graduate 2009 Owner of Stress & Wellness Clinic, Dublin My background was initially in Allopath- ic Medicine. As the years passed, I became more and more interested in other models of healthcare, especially as so many of the illnesses I was witnessing had lifestyle factors at their core - stress, poor nutri- tion, emotional problems. I recognized that there were many things that were helping people that seemed to be outside the sphere of the Allopathic model. This put me on a path to discover more. At this point, I had over 15 years in the orthodox medical world, working as a medical journalist with some of the lead- ing medical publications, writing books and serving at one point as the CEO for the Association of General Practitioners. In 2007, I decided to study Natural medicine and began with Naturopathy and Acupuncture at CNM. It was fantastic. It allowed me to pull everything I had ever studied together and to truly work with people on a mind/body/spirit level. I went on to further train in Osteopathy and Counselling. I love the work I do. It allows me to really connect with people, to create a space where they can open up. It allows me to help people when they most need it. I would recommend the use of natural medicine and lifestyle change to everyone. Applications for all CNM diploma courses - Nutritional Medicine, Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Naturopathy - and short courses - Nutrition for Everyday Living (starting October) - now being accepted. 14 astrology By Margaret Gray MSW D. Psych. Astrology moving from fear into love with the help of the planetary transits Have you noticed recently how the terms Ascension, Vibration and Energy seem to be visible everywhere you look? Have you also noticed a growing excitement within you for a new way of being that is replacing your fear of the old way passing? After several years of frustration and confusion, we are finally beginning to catch glimpses of the potential beauty and joy of the new reality we are creating and manifesting. Depending, as always, on the free will choices we continue to make in our thoughts, actions, words and emotions on a minute by minute basis, this seedling growth could potentially rapidly expand into monumental, joyful, heart-centred changes for the benefit of all. Then heaven and earth will truly feel like one, and the Mayan predictions for the ending of the old and the start of the new will become a joyful, dynamic reality. In looking back at the summer months - the two eclipses in June, followed by the one on July 1st, are likely to have brought many of your deepest fears and inner conflicts to the surface. These may have manifested in differing degrees of peak explosions in one or more areas of your life, as your mind, body and emotions could no longer contain the pressures that had been building up “Are the stars just here to serve the purpose of your schoolroom? Absolutely. Does nothing exist beyond the need for love to remember itself? Nothing - and there is an infinity of more.” ~ Emmanuel’s Book II - The Choice for Love

over the past few years. In fact, many of these conflicts, fears and complexes went back to early childhood, as well as past lives, and had little to do with your current situation. Their source is not as important as your choice to release them, enabling you to travel lighter on your journey forward. The planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, in apparent retro- grade motion in the sky for the remainder of the summer months, offered a rich opportunity to detox, release, heal and change old, outworn, dense default patterns on a mental, emotional and physical level, as each of us prepared for the next stage of this amazing journey of remembering and loving ourselves for who we truly are. One of most important features for the three months ahead is that Saturn (Kronos – the earthy god of time, structures and boundaries) has stopped playing a part in the dynamic, trans- formative relationship between Uranus (the awakening god Prometheus) and Pluto (Hades, god of transmutation) in the sky. From here on in, these two pow- erful energies are unmediated. The lid and containment, together with the sense of frustration and limitation, which Saturn provided has been lifted from this exciting but also potentially explosive alchemical mix. From August onwards, we started to see potential expressions for these Uranian and Plutonian energies which have been brewing over the past two years, as they almost make an exact square to each other in the sky (The first exact square will be on June 26th 2012). To fully grasp what is building up in the sky right now, it can be helpful to visualise these two very powerful mythological gods standing at a 90° angle from each other. There is an awareness of the other being there. However, it is hard to fully see each other and so there can be a tendency for both of these energies to do their own thing at times, without always remembering to find a way to compro- mise and support each other. This can contribute to a somewhat jagged, erratic feeling to the changes that are happening. Although it probably won’t be until this first of 7 exact meetings between Ura- nus and Pluto (in June 2012), that we will get clear information on the full nature of the dynamic changes and awakenings these planetary energies invite us to make, the process is already happening right now. The main ongoing theme is major transformation in our personal (home life, including relationships, our homes, our jobs) and collective structures (including financial, educational, politi- cal and community structures) as a new, innovative consciousness is seeking to emerge. It is worth remembering that the original seeds of the energies for Uranus square Pluto were planted in 1965, when Uranus and Pluto were right next to each other in the sky. Throughout the world, ‘the 60’s’ became synonymous with seek- ing freedom from anything repressive. This was reflected globally through music and art, as well as political changes. In Ireland, war exploded in the North at this time. Economically, although we didn’t actually join the EEC until 1973 because of our link with the UK, we had, in fact, been trying to join since the early 60’s. This was also a time of innovative social change, including the creation of free secondary education which was intro- duced in the later 60’s. Unresolved issues from that time are likely to be revisited from now through 2015, offering us the opportunity for newer, more conscious, expansive and creative choices. Anyone born in 1965 is likely to be particularly in tune with these current changes. In returning to the current months of September, October and November, it may be helpful to take note of a powerful partial Solar Eclipse on November 25th at 2° Sagittarius. This time of new begin- nings offers all of us the opportunity to meditate, in whatever way feels healing, as we embrace more expansive attitudes. You are more likely to feel this energy if your Sun, Moon or Ascendant are on this degree in either Sagittarius, Gemini, Virgo or Pisces.1 This eclipse falls within 3° of the ascendant of the 1949 chart of the Crea- tion of the Republic of Ireland,2 potential- ly powerfully affecting our perception of ourselves and our relationship to others in the world. It also awakens our Arabic Lot of Fortune, indicating a very impor- tant time for Ireland. The world renowned Australian astrologer Bernadette Brady describes this eclipse as a potential “time of confusion --- and (possible) unexpect- ed happenings in financial matters”. She suggests not making important decisions at this time as “there is too much confu- sion to make clear judgments.”3 One of the main themes for these three months is replacing any remain- ing resistance to change with ‘allowing’ and ‘trusting’. Remembering that our natural state is one of balance, perfec- tion and love, in allowing the release of old blockages, fears and limitations, we create space for our natural, creative, expansive, loving soul self to truly blos- som. Trust that the bliss we are seeking is already here and always has been – we are now getting ready to live it out – if we so choose. This final quote, once more from the collection of energies called Emmanuel, channelled by Pat Rodegast, is a wonderful reminder of what these powerful transits, at their core, are invit- ing us to do : “True alchemy is the transformation of the energy of fear into the power of love.” Wishing you all a wonderful Autumn. 1 You can find the degree of your Sun, Moon and Ascendant on any of the free astrology sites including www.astro.com 2 This chart was mentioned in the last Positive Life Magazine. 3 Bernadette Brady Predictive Astrology, The Eagle and the Lark “The main ongoing theme is major transformation in our personal and collective structures as a new, innovative consciousness is seeking to emerge.” Margaret Gray offers Psychological Astrology consultations, seminars and workshops in Ireland, Hawaii and California. margaret@astrologypsychological.com www.astrologypsychological.com

the Divine, are suffused with a powerful force, created from the furnace of the Universe where the vibrational currency of love and light pulsates. Thus, they are encoded with passion and praise, formed from the very blood of the Creator, which quickens their hearts to live out the beauty of the great song of the Soul that once enchanted human life into existence. Since the Italian Renaissance, Angels have mostly been depicted as human beings with wings, although I’ve always seen Angels as Orbs. Seen, that is, since a remarkable encounter with twelve such light beings on Glastonbury Tor during the Harmonic Convergence of 1987. In those early days, in our search for spiritual intelligence away from the confines set by oppressive religious establishment, it was extremely unusual to see circles of plasma energy; whereas during our current era, digital photogra- phy brings this extraordinary phenomena to our attention. Not surprisingly, in those early days, my conversation about brilliant balls of light was sparse, particularly as my unseen guides had requested discre- tion. Until I read the early Christian mys- tics, whose precedent stated that Angels were Orbs. So believed Thomas Aquinas, St. John of the Cross and Hildegard von Bingen. And yet, to this day, we gaze in awe and wonder at the undiminished beauty and splendour of the great paint- ers, and their rendition of Angelic order. Twelve Angels work with me, to help take their wonderment further into the embodiment of us humans. They accord themselves archetypal traits that penetrate the very membrane of our individual and collective mind.Arche- types are keys to our consciousness, and illustrate generic versions of our ‘person- ality’. For example, if we initially gaze at the lapis lazuli-orb of Gabriel the Divine Messenger, an oracle opens through the lineage of the wisdom traditions. These move through the sands of time, from Atlantis to the Egyptian God Thoth and beyond. Thoth was regarded as the ‘Scribe Messenger of the Gods’, then appearing much later as the Greek Hermes and the Roman Mercury. They brought messages from the Gods to humanity, and engaged in spectacular acts to save humans from peril. Gabriel the Messenger brought the Koran to Mohammad, and the annuncia- tion to Mary and Elizabeth - therefore the witness of this Angel reminds us of how inspired action may be wrought from sacred messages - from the love, grace and wisdom of divine order. Similarly, we may again gaze at the violet-orb of Michael the Cosmic Leader, who overshadowed Osiris the ‘Magnani- mous Leader’. Osiris, with Michael’s aid, led the Egyptian people through a golden age of prosperity in pre-dynastic times. Then, later emerged as the Greek Zeus, and the Roman Jupiter, helping to fulfil individual life-force by establishing the kingdom of personal sovereignty. This domain is where the I AM presence lives. In effect, Michael brings forth the essence of leadership, enchantment, patience and the ability to transmute challenges or woes into our divine power. Please do check the Orbs to feel your own personal archetypal key. www.thealchemyofvoice.com16 Angels of Atlantis “Angels and Celestial Spirits have always existed - in the pages of sacred and mystical texts, in the minds and hearts of ordinary human beings…” By Stewart Pearce In the legends of the Middle East, there exists an ancient story. This concerns the role of Angels as beings appointed by the Creator. The tale tells how the Infinite One made a statue of clay in the image of his or her own likeness, and asked the Soul to enter it. But the Soul refused, for to be captured thus meant sure imprison- ment, and the soul’s essence was to love inclusively - moving through the cosmos in pure joy, liberated to supernal ecstasy. However, through infinite wisdom, the Creator asked the Angelic Kingdom to sing such seraphic music that the Soul became so enchanted, so deeply stirred by the magic of this celestial sound, that the Soul agreed to enter the body of clay. And so became the embodiment of Adam Kadmon - so began human life. Angels and Celestial Spirits have always existed - in the pages of sacred and mystical texts, in the minds and hearts of ordinary human beings, and in ubiqui- tous acts that have lovingly supported humanity. Wherever they may be, what- ever form they may take, and whenever they appear, Angels, as messengers of

19 By Ewa Rexach At some point in my ascension process, I started feeling as though there was a locked door between my head and the rest of my body. Layers of stuck energy I had been working with for years seemed to come up my energy field and stop at the level of my arms, shoulders and neck, especially on the right side. I actually felt excited; finally a big portion of my pain-body had been processed and transmuted, ready for release. The juice was squeezed out of it, lessons in darkness learned. I was ready to leave the old behind, but the energy was stuck and didn’t seem to be able to move up past the very tangible barrier at the level of my neck, right around the Alta Major chakra. I also had an inner knowing that this is not only my problem, that I had just touched a ceiling of human limitation and conditioning, keeping our species vibrating at a low frequency. This was the barrier which allowed us to forget, to get cut off from our interdimensional aspects and cosmic remembrance, and dwell in the 3D world. I felt that breaking through this blockage was the key to going to the next level of consciousness. I knew I needed some good body work, and I sent an intention to the universe for synchronicity. Soon after, I stumbled upon an article on the internet, “Reversing the Curse: The Block in the Homo Sapiens” by J.C.Koven, and I imme- diately resonated with it. I learned about a treatment (now called Atlas Evolution, as developed by Ranan Shahar) that aligns the whole body, focusing on the atlas (the top cervical vertebra) which is thought to be out of alignment in practically all humans, blocking the energy flow between the brain and the rest of the body. Of course, that was exactly the spot where I had felt the energy blockage. I didn’t care about the details of the treatment, I just knew I was going to do it. I spent the day before the appoint- ment in joyous anticipation, feeling a big change on the horizon. I even made a little ceremony with candles, opening myself on deeper levels for the next day’s session. I received Ranan’s treatment a few days before the big portal of 10:10:10. It was not a pampering experience (I felt a few sore spots like never before), but a deeply releasing body work unlike anything else I had experienced before, with immediate results. As I was lying on the table, I moved through a tunnel of light which looked like an amazing vortex above my head. I rushed into the new space and felt an incredible lightness and freedom on all levels. I made it through the dam. I danced back home and felt an overwhelming urge to sit upright and meditate, which, after the session, seemed to be the most natural position to be in. A radiant Light Being appeared in the room, greeting me lovingly in the New Space and congratulating me for having arrived on the other side of the dam. This blockage seemed to have been purposely implanted in the human species, keeping us in limitation, but now, from the new perspective, it didn’t really matter. I just felt compassion for us all. It’s about embracing all our aspects, the “positive” and “negative” ones, and moving beyond judgment. The next day, strong waves of emotions came to the surface. The stuck energy started dismantling itself, making itself known to me before it was ready to be released completely. That’s the less pleasant part of the process. It was easier for me to let it flow through me though, without getting too much involved in it. As the emotions were releasing, I felt deep gratitude for the process, for Ranan and for his healing work helping us all move to the next level. www.atlasevolution.com To book an appointment, contact Julia on 0857800125 breaking through the dam “I spent the day before the appointment in joyous anticipation, feeling a big change on the horizon.”

By Dr Evelien van amerongen In 1998, during a Heavy Metal Detoxifica- tion seminar, I was introduced to the Photon-Wave Light Therapy machine developed by Leona Vermeire. The device was used for detoxi- fication of the brain by having specific combinations of light and colour and pulsation of frequencies administered through the eyes. The specific photon wave light program for this detoxification includes the exact same frequencies as the Mercury molecule. I ended up purchasing the light machine and introduced it, still some- what sceptically, to my dental patients after mercury filling removal. At the time, the only place I could install the machine in my clinic was an empty broom cupboard. I was shocked to learn that our mercury sniffer (measures the levels of mercury vapour in the surrounding area) was reading abnormally high levels of Mercury in the cupboard after sessions. By researching this subject at a deeper level, I learned that the colour frequencies used were “satisfying” the Mercury molecules. This broke the chemical bond between the brain fat and the Mercury, after which the body was able to excrete the mercury through the breath and the elimination organs. This explained the high mercury readings in the cupboard. Stimulated by the positive reac- tions from the patients, the science of light and colour therapy took me on a fantastic journey of learning. The Photon- Wave Light Therapy is my personal favourite support therapy at the ISHSKO Centre, and now incorporates colours, gems and sound-current frequencies, in both dental and detoxification treatment. Why was this administration of light through the eyes so effective? Light from the sun or any source is necessary to see. This light travels via the optic nerve into the visual cortex and makes it possible for us to see. But more importantly, the incoming light serves to stimulate the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland and other parts of the brain that are known to regulate the biological rhythm and production of vital chemicals like melatonin. Light is known to stimulate the power of » self-regulatory healing. It balances the autonomic nervous system. » It promotes psychological and physiological » wellbeing. Light through the eyes is obvi- ously the shortest and most direct way to stimulate the brain with the most natural electromagnetic power available. Most recently, Fritz-Albert Popp, Ph.D. has identified biophotons (biologi- cally generated packets of light), which are found in every cell and DNA. These biophotons are part of a light-based com- munication system that relays important biological information between cells within the body. Given that the cells of our bodies communicate using light, it seems plausible that human beings could be strongly affected by light. Mal-illumination Because of our increasingly indoor life and lack of exposure to sunlight, most people are somewhat malnourished of light. This light deficiency decreases our visual field and ability to see specific colours. When our visual field is dis- torted and diminished, our body will not function optimally. It has been proven that light therapy via the eyes will cor- rect the visual field and the dysfunction in the body. Since I acquired the Photon-Wave machine, it has become an intricate part of our holistic approach to detoxifica- tion. The most common applications within our clinic are for Psychosomatic problems, Emotional problems, Immune- system deficiency, Neurological problems, Detoxification of heavy metals, Wound healing and bone regeneration, Hormonal balancing, Cases of chronic pain, and SAD syndrome. There are many advantages of light therapy: No side effects » Holistic approach » Experienced by patients as uplifting and » comforting Easy to administer » Very short therapy time, ranging from 5 – 15 » minutes, with remarkable effects after a few sessions. 20 healing with light For further information, please visit www.mercuryfreedentistry.eu or give the ISHSKO Centre a call on 098 26200 cdef gdhh ihcjkjlh mg noh genedh

This creation stuff is tricky business. We are so locked into the old rules and regulations of how it has to be done that we can’t see the forest for the trees. Especially because even what we knew of it a year ago has changed and expanded. If we are still holding on to the illusion that the forest and the trees are there regardless of our focus and creation of them, we are missing the newest, most unlimited thought possible. What if God is merely energy that created for us? That energy - let’s call it the Creative Force - loved us so much that it simply wanted us to play with the creation and manipulation of It, so It could have awesome experiences of everything It could possibly imagine. And let’s pretend that It didn’t call any of those experiences bad: war was simply an exercise in the creation of war, love was dabbling in a different vibra- tional exercise, etc. Our world of Us would be a virtual reality game where we could create anything and everything without fear of judgment, being wrong, committing sin, losing love, or death from decision in any way. It’s a description of Freedom that is difficult to understand from the limited thoughts of a fearful society. Our perspective is the most impor- tant creation tool in the creation process, and we have heard that principle expressed in a myriad of ways throughout the years: seeing the glass half full or half empty, “As you believe, it will be delivered to you,” and as Henry Ford so aptly put it, “If you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” These statements are all saying the same thing: reality is created by choice. Choos- ing the reality we want, then, should be a no-brainer. Easy. Effortless. It appears to be so easy that it is hard to grasp. “If it is that easy,” we argue, “why don’t I have what I want?” Because you don’t believe it’s that easy! And as you believe… We just can’t seem to allow ourselves the unlimited thought that daydreaming and the virtual reality of creation By Dee Wallace “If you can see it, you can create it; but with ease and grace, not force and manipulation.” imagining and being happy and being joyful is all we have to do to create that in our lives. It has to be more complicated. We have to learn and study and meditate for hours and go through all sorts of machina- tions to create us being able to create. We are repeating the same need for rituals that old religion did and calling it New Age. Creation should be fun and joyous. Indeed, creation doesn’t happen without that. And yet, here we are, toiling away to figure it out. So, obviously, there is a belief in place that creation is hard, and as we believe, it is delivered. You can see what awesome creators we are. We are delivering some substantial struggle in our lives. There are five components to Creation: Know, Believe, Allow, Be Happy, Release. Let’s take money. “I know I am the creation of it. I believe the money is created, I allow it to manifest from anywhere, I choose to be happy. I release it to the Universe to deliver.” If you can see it, you can create it; but with ease and grace, not force and manipulation. Our minds want to fight that. Our minds want to play by the old rules and regulations of power, manipulation and control. That doesn’t work in the world of virtual reality, because it limits everything and enters the creation game with limita- tions in place. Who wants to create a virtual world with limitations? We want the vir- tual worlds of freedom, unconditional love, wellness and more-than-enoughness. The games that invite us to pick up the sword and the gun are the virtual worlds we create until we know that the greatest power of creation is Love. That is our power. Create that virtual world. Yippee! Dee Wallace has worked as an author, teacher, dancer and actress in film, television and the stage for over 30 years (E.T. Cujo, The Howling). Her book, Bright Light, tells that tale and shares the spiritual lessons she has learned from a life in acting. iamdeewallace.com 23 positive personality

By Joel Young Folks who learn NPA - and consistently practise it - report that all those sticky, awkward, interpersonal blocks just slide away and the quality of their personal interactions with people, across the board, improve dramatically. In case you haven’t yet heard of NPA, it stands for ‘Non-Personal Awareness’ and is a really simple 6 line, spoken word process that helps you let go of the yucky stuff and let in the yummy stuff of life. It does that by helping you touch into the awareness that everything is energy and fundamentally non-personal. So, how can this be? How can an approach that helps you focus on the ‘non- personal’ nature of reality improve your ‘personal’ interactions and relationships? In common language use, making relationships more ‘personal’ generally refers to offering more of yourself; being more open, more authentic and more available. However, what present themselves as obstacles in the space between people is our seemingly immoveable, pervasive self-identities. NPA works to dis-identify you from your ‘stuff’. Somehow you just realise that your ‘stuff’ is not ‘you’, it just ‘is’. And the personal investment in the story of you, or the concept of who you are supposed to be (or not be) lessens. Ultimately, your hand-me-down survival strategies and ego games become meaningless. What you are left with is the freedom to Be! And what is ‘The freedom to Be’? Well, on a practical level, there is no image to protect when you interact with others; no false walls between you. Who you are in the moment has space to breathe and live and express itself. Self-consciousness dwindles, and radical self acceptance emerges. This is where true self-discovery begins. Or, you could say, this is where True-Self discovery begins. It’s the wonderment of discovering who you are in this environment or that environment, with this person or that person. The unconditionally loving witness is awake and aware, resting as the founda- tion of wellbeing, at the heart of your life experience. On a very down-to-Earth level, what emerges from this is a much more open, authentic and available inter-personal experience. Gill and John are a couple who came together to an NPA event and decided to use their process time to work with each other. Gill had told me that she and her husband were working to improve their relation- ship. She had done a lot of this sort of thing before, and he really hadn’t. An identity gulf and a lot of frustration had built up on both ‘sides’. In the morning, where we use NPA to ‘let out the yucky stuff’ – in other words, let go of our attachment to painful false self-identities that are so often fiercely protected - I watched as Gill and John’s walls came down. In the afternoon, where we ‘let in the yummy stuff’ – in other words open the doors to our authentic, natural expression – I watched Gill and John opened to the real heart of each other, and melted into the love that had always been there between them. At the end of the event, I found a tes- timonial penned by John. It described NPA quite simply as: “A Gateway to Intimacy.” The NPA Expansive Weekend, Dublin. By Olga Sheean If you’ve given up on ever having the ulti- mate relationship, you’re missing out on a huge chunk of love and life. While you might think of them as being essential to your happiness, relationships are, in fact, about reclaiming your original ‘blueprint’ - the real you. They’re your principal healing tools and your ultimate pathway to empowerment, wholeness and balance. Once you know how to interpret and utilise them, they provide you with all the information and clues you need for growth and fulfilment. We’re constantly relating to people, situations and feelings; and how we relate to them defines us. Relating is the story of our life - the story we tell people about who we are. In interacting with others, we transmit messages about our beliefs, fears, strengths and weaknesses - consciously and subconsciously. What story do you tell? Is your story a thriller, a drama, a rags-to-riches saga, or an epic romance with a happy ending? And how do you relate, or avoid relating, to people in your life? To fully discover ourselves, we must fully engage in relationships, with all their challenges and complexities. If we avoid dealing with the demands, desires or expectations of others, we’re not challenged to change, grow or dig deep for compassion, acceptance and understanding. But when we embrace them wholeheartedly, relationships take us on a journey of healing, self-discovery and empowerment, bringing more love, laughter and fulfilment than we could ever have had on our own. Relationships enable us to heal and grow in three main ways: 1 They show us what’s missing inside by triggering our issues, opening up old wounds to be healed, and chal- lenging us to love ourselves uncondi- tionally. We cannot truly love another unless we love ourselves, and it’s the conflict between our desire to be loved and our subconscious belief that we do not deserve love that is at the root of most relationship problems. If we missed out on affection, validation or support in our upbringing, for example, these ‘missing pieces’ will show up in our relationships; we must embody these qualities to make ourselves emotionally complete and to attract the same healthy wholeness in others. 2 They enable us to become powerful, creative individuals. By taking respon- sibility for our feelings, reactions and circumstances, and by using our partner as a mirror and sounding board for our growth, we realise just how powerfully we can shape our own lives. When we let go of the negative stories we carry around in our heads, we open up a whole new realm of possibilities. We become dynamic, purposeful and clear, aware of our ability to meet our own needs and to attract what we want. 3 They’re the doorway to intimacy, authenticity and fulfilment. The only way we can experience these qualities in our relationships is by expressing and revealing who we are. As we dare to go deeper in sharing ourselves with others, we’re challenged to reveal it all - the good, the bad and the ugly. If we do this, we can heal our deepest wounds and generate more intimacy than we could ever have had by keeping our ‘shameful’ aspects hidden. We inhabit the Earth collectively so that we can learn how to love and understand ourselves, through each other. Coming here one at a time or living alone in a remote cave would not serve our purpose of self-realization. Love - or the lack of it - shapes our lives. How deeply we dig for it, how much we believe in it, and how we apply it determines our success in finding emotional and spiritual fulfilment. In mastering the art of intimate relationship, we ultimately reach a place of deep inner peace and acceptance. In so doing, we become aware of our tremendous ability - and responsi- bility - to positively influence our world, reawaken our creativity, and experience our ultimate self. This is the success story that every one of us can write. Judgement By Patrick Bridgeman It seems to me that Judgement is an evolutionary tool that has itself evolved. Originally, it may have been a survival skill to navigate through an as- yet-unknown world of safety and danger, divided into things that would keep you alive and things that would cause you to die. Over the centuries, that would have become fine-tuned to distinguish objects and substances even further - things that would feel pleasurable and things that would cause pain and suffering. Not too long ago, this fine tuning would have evolved yet again to include words, atti- tudes and beliefs. People would be grouped according to gender, religious beliefs, skin colour or sexual preference, and segrega- tion would have thrived. These days, that is still the case in many parts of the world,

but there are also the more widespread and much subtler judgements of how someone looks, how they speak, what they eat and how much money they have. There is this and more, and it all stems back to the original safety/danger judgement. It is such a prevalent occupation of the human mind, one that has been critical for our survival and yet criticised more than most. So, in order to get a more well- rounded take on the subject, we decided to ask two of the most respected spiritual teachers in the world, Byron Katie (best- selling author, and founder of The Work) and Darryl Anka (spiritual filmmaker, and channel for Bashar), to share their experiences and give us their thoughts on Judgement. “In my twenty-eight years channel- ling Bashar and absorbing his information and perspective on life,” Darryl began, “I’ve come to understand that everything has both a positive and negative side. To simply recognize and state the difference between a negative behaviour and a positive one is a positive judgement. To condemn or devalue someone or something because of that behaviour would be a negative judgement that only adds to the overall negative energy of the situation, whereas a neutral observation or discernment can be the beginning of understanding, clarity and transformation.” When I asked Darryl what he thought the purpose of Judgement was, he said, “In defining positive judgement as discern- ment, or simply neutral observation, then the purpose of this ability would be to allow us to tell the difference between positive and negative energies. Defining positive energy or behaviour as that which integrates, connects and expands, and negative energy as that which segregates, disconnects and contracts, it becomes easier to determine which attributes we prefer in our lives, while at the same time, having a neutral attitude allows us to determine the attributes we don’t prefer while maintaining compassion and understanding for those who may choose more negative paths.” “In learning this lesson and let- ting go of negative judgement,” Darryl continued, “my own life has changed in many positive ways. Staying in a positive state - where one can recognize negative energy with discernment but not succumb to it - has allowed me to remain free from the negative vibrational state and the nega- tive effects that accompany it.” In this way, we can send love to a war zone while knowing that we never want to experience a war - sending only positive energy, and thus tipping the balance of positive and negative. I find that awareness, acceptance and what I would call “non-judgement” allow for a fuller flow of Love to come through us to those around us and the situation we are in, or whatever we are focusing on. I adopt this state of being while facilitating healing sessions for people. I don’t try to know what is best for the person I am helping. I just pay attention, follow the flow and do whatever I am guided to do. The results are usually wonderful, and truly life-changing. Those who come to me sometimes already know what they would prefer in their lives, but letting go of “negative energy” and clear- ing blocks in energetic pathways allows for more awareness of (and understanding of) that which integrates, connects and expands your own “positive energy.” In this way, you can more positively judge the best path for you to take in your life, and in the moment. When I asked Byron Katie about her journey with Judgement, she said, “Before 1986, when I woke up to reality, I was as judgemental as most people—more judgemental, probably, since I was a lot more troubled. Then I discovered that judgements are harmless; it’s only when we believe them that they are a problem for us. This was a huge realization. At the moment when I found The Work (when The Work found me), I understood that when we believe our judgements, we suffer, but that when we question them, we don’t suffer. A mind that doesn’t question its judgements makes the world very small and dangerous. It must continue to fill the world with bad things and bad people, and in doing so it creates its own suffering. The worst thing that ever happened exists only in the past, which means that it doesn’t exist at all. Right now, it’s only a stressful thought in your mind. “Then I discovered that judgements are harmless; it’s only when we believe them that they are a problem for us.” PHOTO: KASEY LENNON29

You can’t change the projected world, but you can change your mind - the projector. Just notice when things are out of balance. You don’t have to fi gure it out. There’s a built-in signal that will always let you know: it’s called stress. Your unques- tioned thoughts about life lead you to believe that there’s something out of order, and that can never be true. In itself, life is effortless. If you think there’s a problem, inquire, until you can see how perfect the way of it is.” I asked them both how important acceptance and forgiveness are in relation to Judgement? “Everyone wants to accept and forgive,” Byron says, “but it’s just not possible so long as we are believing our stressful thoughts and judgements. For- giveness means discovering that what you thought happened didn’t. Until you can see that there is nothing to forgive, you haven’t really forgiven. No one has ever hurt anyone. No one has ever done anything terrible. There’s nothing terrible except your uninvestigated thoughts about what happened. So, whenever you suffer: question the thoughts you’re believing, and set yourself free. When there’s no story, no past or future, nothing to worry about, nothing to do, nowhere to go, no one to be, it’s all good.” No one has ever hurt anyone? Wow! That is a powerful thought that I am sure a lot of people will fi nd hard to accept. To help you integrate the thought, you could download a Judge-Your-Neighbour Worksheet at www.thework.com, write down your judgements about someone you haven’t forgiven 100%, then do The Work on what you have written. (There are detailed instructions on Byron’s website.) Equally powerful is Darryl’s answer that, “Forgiveness, from Bashar’s perspec- tive, would be that state of compassion that creates an ability to understand why and how negative choices are made, yet also allows for the possibility that other, more positive options always exist. Negative judgement provides no ability to demonstrate that a person who has chosen a negative path could choose a positive one - it only reinforces the negative path they’re already on by providing more of the same energy. On the other hand, forgiveness, of oneself as well as others, demonstrates an understanding that, while the intentions may have been positive, the tools a person has been taught may only allow them to express themselves in negative ways. For- giveness provides the neutral perspective and the compassionate attitude that makes it possible to see how new, positive tools and behaviours can be shared and learned that more harmoniously align with the underlying desire and intention to be and feel self-empowered.” I asked Darryl if he had any practical tips for you, dear reader, to help you (and me) to develop a better relationship with Judgement. He replied, “Quite often, simply redefi ning certain concepts, as Bashar often does, will give greater insight into how progress can be made and new perspectives can be incorporated into our consciousness. By redefi ning judgement in the way I’ve done here, it opens up new paths that one can take in exploring the whole concept. Often, it’s only our assumption that concepts have only one meaning that keeps us stuck in a vibration we don’t prefer. If we exercise imagination, which is the path of communication between our higher mind and physical mind, then it can inspire us with new defi nitions more in alignment with our preferred state of being and free us from outdated defi ni- tions that keep us locked in a negative experience. Negative judgement is often the result of something we fear within ourselves that another’s actions or words remind us of. If we are afraid to face that fear, then we often react with negative judgement and project anger onto others for reminding us - whether they did so intentionally or not - that we are afraid to look inward at what we believe to be our own fl aws. Positive discernment comes from knowing that no matter what negative beliefs we may discover within ourselves, we always have the self-empowered capacity to change them in positive ways. If we no longer fear to look within, then we have no reason to negatively judge others who may exhibit those traits we also may contain.” Take a moment to let that sink in. Phew… Truly taking this onboard, and doing The Work on the Judge-Your- Neighbour Worksheet, will change your life in a big way. Are you ready to let go of years of stress, fear and resentment? Do you want to live a more positive life in the moment of now? You can do it, and I hope I’ve helped. “Often, it’s only our assumption that concepts have only one meaning that keeps us stuck in a vibration we don’t prefer.” patrickbridgeman.wordpress.com www.thework.com www.bashar.org www.ziafi lms.com30

By Mary Berkery Your skin is a living, functioning, rhythmical organ. It is about 2mm thick and has approxi- mately 3.5 million pores, making it semi-permeable. It has 3 distinct layers and is the largest organ of the body. Within 24 hours of conception, the initial two cells start dividing - one form- ing the skin, the other the brain and spinal cord. Skin is the sensory aspect of the brain and is often called the “outer brain”. It continually transmits messages from the periphery to the core, with an immediate response in return, e.g. when you touch something hot, you pull away. It is an organ of elimination, elimi- nating excess fluids and acidity through its many pores. In traditional Chinese medi- cine, when hands are damp or clammy it indicates poor kidney function. It is an organ of absorption, so one needs to be careful what they put on their skin. Live Food expert David Woulfe says, “You should not put on your skin what you cannot eat.” It reflects your inner being. We all have been in situations where we are embarrassed or nervous; skin lets you down with blushing and blotches. Outside influences such as weather conditions, seasonal changes and air conditioning affect it. Over exposure to the sun’s rays can damage the collagen and elastic fibres. However, some sun exposure is needed to promote its health and aid in the formation of vital Vitamin D. From within, it is fed by nutrients from the blood supply. High vibrational, live foods are rich in Omega-6 oils, Vitamin A, C and E, silica and sulphur, which all affect skin radiance from inside. Proper hydration and, if possible, ionized alkali- nized water is of paramount importance to glowing skin. Your skin, like every other organ, has a rhythm. It renews itself every 28-30 days, where the lower layers of the dermis have moved to the surface and then slough off… in the beauty business, we say it desquamates. It has different functions at differ- ent times of the day. During the night, it regenerates itself, produces its own natural oils and eliminates by-products of cell metabolism. By day, this protective oil mantle, called sebum, acts as an antibacte- rial, antifungal and antiviral barrier. We can weaken this natural function with incorrect use of heavy, oily night creams and over washing with harsh soap products. Working as a Beauty Tutor, I real- ized that most methods of attending to different skin conditions was similar to orthodox medicine, where one removes or camouflages the problem. There was very little understanding as to how the imbalance appeared on the skin. This requires whole-person solutions, looking at nutritional as well as emotional aspects. While in Switzerland, I deepened my stud- ies with Physiognomy - which shows how the face and skin reflect the conditions of the inner body. PHYSIOGNOMY: SKIN COLOUR AND TONE High colouring often reflects heart and circulatory problems… meat, sugar and a sedentary lifestyle can cause this. If the skin is pale and lacking in vitality, it can show lung depletion, often due to too much dairy and processed wheat products. A yellow pallor shows a congested liver and gall bladder, which can be due to heavy, fatty foods, alcohol and drugs. A grey pallor can indicate kidney weakness. An acidic diet, sodas and caf- feine drinks can weaken the kidneys. Blotches and blemishes often reflect an inner imbalance from an over acidic diet. I had a client with white heads all over her face. My recommendation was to cut out all dairy food from her diet. Soon after, all the white heads disappeared. Total care requires “inner cosmetic care” - alkalizing nutrition and hydration. For outer cosmetic care, use natural skin care rituals with certified organic botanical product ranges. These aid the skin’s func- tion and rhythm rather than inhibiting it. Your skin reflects you (mentally, physically and emotionally). Proper care maintains its radiance, prevents premature wrinkling, dryness and blemishes. Michio Kushi, founder of Macrobiotic Medicine at the Kushi Institute, says, “The skin should look like a bubbling spring, reflecting the inner vitality of the whole person.” A Radiant You Sat, Oct 15th, 2-5pm Tips, recipes and rituals to vitalize and renew your whole being. mary@livingbeauty.ie skin as a reflection of you positive beauty “Your skin reflects you (mentally, physically and emotionally).” 33

By Dr Gill Hart It’s not surpris- ing that people are reluctant to fi nd out which foods might be contributing to their ill health symptoms: “Where do I start? Which foods should I be avoiding? I just can’t do it”. For those of us who have been faced with having to make, sometimes radical, dietary changes, there are many questions that need answering. What exactly can I eat if I have to remove milk, wheat, gluten and yeast from my diet? Where can I buy those alternatives? How will I manage if I go out to a restaurant and will my friends think I am being awk- ward? There is no doubt that it can be really daunting and can put people off trying to fi nd out their culprit foods in the fi rst place. Looking on the massive plus side though, the benefi ts that dietary change can bring can literally be life-changing. The evidence is clear that food intolerance exists, that 45% of the population are suffering from food intolerance and that the ill health symptoms associated with this condition are far and wide ranging. Why is it still the case then that doctors rarely explore the link between food intolerance and chronic conditions such as gut symptoms, irritable bowel, headaches, migraines, sore joints, eczema, skin rashes and fatigue with their patients? The fact is that every individual person is unique with a different biochemi- cal make-up, even to others with similar conditions. For example, cow’s milk, oranges and eggs may be responsible for Emily’s headaches but safe for Jane who also suffers from headaches. The challenge is to identify the exact culprit foods, and then to feel supported in sticking to your new regime. The link between adherence to dietary advice and improvement of symptoms is clear. In the largest study of its kind, commissioned by the leading medical charity, Allergy UK, it was shown that of 3,559 people who were strict at keeping to the diet according to their test results, 76% reported signifi cant improve- ments in their food intolerance symptoms. Of the 1,436 people that made a reasonable attempt at the diet, only 66% reported noticeable improvement. In addition, just to show the impact, out of those who strug- gled changing their diet, only 16% felt any change; and that wasn’t sustained. The test used in the study is the YorkTest FoodScan; it only requires a few drops of blood from a fi nger prick that can be collected by you in the comfort of your own home. This blood test measures food-specifi c IgG antibodies. Antibodies to foods are found in the body when the immune system has identifi ed a particular food type as being “foreign”. Measurement of IgG antibodies to foods in blood shows that the body is fi ghting that particular food. Nutritionist consultations, carried out over the telephone, are offered as standard as part of the YorkTest Food Intolerance Programme. Most people newly diagnosed with food intolerance are usually fully enthused and determined to change their diet, and make every effort to stick to the new “rules”. The research showed that it is after getting through the fi rst few weeks, and when starting to feel better, that sustaining the new diet becomes diffi cult: “Just a small amount of XXX food won’t hurt,” says that devilish little voice in your head. Sound familiar? But with your Nutritional Thera- pist there for you, encouraging you along the way, making sure that you stick to the programme and giving you tips to keep that enthusiasm going, it’s easy to succeed. “The fact is that every individual person is unique with a different biochemical make- up, even to others with similar conditions.” 34 optimise your health personalise your diet If you think you have a food intolerance, or if you have been tested and feel that you need additional help in sticking to your new diet, contact 01 2022701 www.yorktest.ie Dr. Gill Hart will be talking at the Rude Health both days at 3pm in the Cape Theatre 1 and will be available for questions at Stand 240.

By Dhara Kelly Let us remember that ‘detoxing’ is just a current, popular word for cleansing. ‘Cleansing’ (an age-old practise), in fact, more accurately suggests that there is a natural accumulation of wastes in the body which can, with gentle stimulation, be passed out easily and unhurriedly. Taking a hint from Nature, the turning of the seasons is always a good time to consider embarking on a detox regime. Moving into Autumn or Winter, for example, is an appropriate time to re-calibrate our whole energy system, and a new exercise regimen also fits in perfectly with a detox as part of a seasonal gear-change. With the coming of the new Season, we find new foods, new light, new patterns in our lives and a welcoming in our bodies for change. A detox regime can be easy, fun and very rewarding. It is easiest of all if you are in a dedicated environment where there are none of the usual temptations. The result is a new and unexpected level of energy, and all the wonderful possibili- ties this confers. Then there is the new glow in your skin, the sparkle in your eyes, the improved memory, the desire for healthy eating that always follows a good detox. Your body wants to be well! It simply needs to be supported in this routine, daily task. Remember… elimi- nation of waste from the body goes hand-in-hand with eating, drinking and breathing. It’s natural. When our body knows what is hap- pening, it is able to deal efficiently with situations as they arise. When our body is unclear, it finds it hard to make good decisions. How does this come about? Quite simply: by eating and drinking substances which confuse our internal communication systems. We all know how reality can be distorted by alcohol, recreational drugs or prescription drugs. We all know how a cup of coffee effects us energetically, or even tea. Chocolate or any high-sugar food also has this effect. Mostly, that’s why we take these things. And indeed, anything which sends adrenaline into the system will also distort it, which can lead to fear, anger and stress. Even watching the news on TV becomes distorting in a subtle way. None of these things matter in themselves. Distortion only becomes a problem when either the timing is wrong (e.g. driving) or when we become dependant. If we lose access to our inner wisdom, we start to look outside for the information. And a lot of the information out there can lead us astray or into confu- sion. This is where we come to realize that detoxing is more than clearing out junk from the system. It is about getting a little closer to the truth of who we really are, accessing our own internal body wisdom. How does detoxing do this? In order to understand this, it’s useful to view the body as an energy event. We can get a better understanding of this using the model of the body that we are given by the Chinese. They understand the body as being composed of energy meridians (pathways) and points of access. They also understand that the energy centre of the body is in the abdo- men, the general area of the intestinal tract. For the Chinese, stagnation in this area results in a reduction of the vitality of the whole system. Detoxing directly addresses this, and it is the most obvious and the most important way that detoxing benefits us. Of course, our vitality will then show through the freshness of our complexion, hair, nails, the better sense of taste and touch, a new optimism and a new feeling of clarity and purpose, along with new horizons in our eyes. authentic ayurveda By Patrick Bridgeman What a nice surprise to be invited to the beautiful coastal town of Westport to review the country’s pre-eminent Ayurvedic Spa. My wife and I had a pleasant drive across from Dublin and were greeted upon arrival at the Carlton Atlantic Coast Hotel by the lovely Michelle Ryan, who gave us a tour and introduced us to Sandra McCaffrey, captain of the Health Spa and champion of Ayurvedic treatments. The dozen or so authentic Ayurvedic treatments available, from the more than capable hands of 1 - 3 practitioners born and raised amongst the Ayurvedic traditions in India, all seemed like experiences I wanted to have. In the end, I decided to have Shi- rodhara, facilitated by the insightful Dr. Thomas T. Pampackel. For those who don’t know, Shirodhara is a very popular treatment in India, where warm oil is poured continuously onto the centre of the forehead (third eye) for 30 minutes. It acts like a psychic enema, cleansing the mind and sending you into a deep, trance like state of total relaxation. At fi rst, my thoughts were busy running this way and that, but then, every so often, I would wake up, realising that I had been away in a place of ‘no mind’ for God knows how long. It reminded me of what Deepak Chopra refers to as the space between thoughts where the fi eld of pure consciousness resides. At the same time, my wife Evi was having a very healing experience while receiving an Ayurvedic Massage and Basti treatment in another room in the Spa. Afterwards, we were given medicinal Ayurvedic tea and allowed to relax for as long as we needed. The whole experience was so nurturing that we decided to stay on an extra night and really make the most of our time there. With today’s busy lifestyle, more and more people are looking to make positive changes to their diet in order to improve their overall health. Luckily, this is a task that has been made simple, as there have never been as many resources available. Infor- mation about food is available through all media - books, magazines, internet sites, mobile apps, and much more. While one may panic when they hear that their cholesterol is high, the good news is that you can reduce your cholesterol naturally in a short time by making some very simple dietary changes. By making these changes, you will get more nutrition than ever before, reap incredible health benefits for your heart and body, and positive changes to your overall health and wellbeing will occur. 1 Switch to healthier fats: The total amount of fat you eat, whether high or low isn’t really linked with disease. What really matters is the type of fat you eat. The “bad” fats - saturated and trans fats - increase the risk for certain diseases. The “good” fats, however - monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats - lower disease risk. The key to a healthy diet is to include more good fats such as fatty fish, seeds such as flaxseed and seed oils, olive oil, avocados, nuts such as walnuts, macadamia nuts, almonds and also nut butters. Further- more, it is important to limit saturated fats to a minimum by reducing red meat, dairy, vegetable oils, pastries, cakes, biscuits and fried foods. 2 Omega-3 fatty acids from cold water fatty fish have many benefits for heart health. They have been shown to lower triglycerides, balance cholesterol, regulate heart rate and make blood platelets less sticky, improving overall heart health con- siderably. Omega-3 fats are found in high amounts in oily fish, and to a lesser degree in nuts and seeds. Whilst making sure that you eat plenty of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines is important for good health, supplementing with a daily dose of high quality omega-3 fish oil such as Eskimo-3 is important for achieving an optimum intake of omega-3. 3 Plant Sterols: Studies have shown that plant sterols can help to reduce cholesterol. As plant sterols are structurally similar to human cholesterol, they help to limit cho- lesterol absorption in the gut. Plant sterols are present naturally in small quantities in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other plant sources. However, typical west- ern diets supply only around 200 - 400mg plant sterols per day. If you have a raised blood cholesterol level, you will require 2g plant sterols per day to lower your choles- terol. Scientific research has proven that plant sterols can reduce cholesterol by up to 10% in 6 weeks. A new easy way to obtain plant sterols is through Zerochol, a plant sterol food supplement which is available over the counter in health food stores and pharmacies. 4 Soluble fibre: Foods such as oats contain soluble fibre which can reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol by limiting the amount of cholesterol absorbed by your body. Studies have shown that consuming 10 - 25g soluble fibre a day can lower cholesterol by 15%. By including foods such as porridge, oatcakes, fruits (apples, prunes and pears), vegeta- bles, pulses (kidney beans, lentils, and chickpeas), you should be able to obtain the recommended amount of soluble fibre daily. 5 Fruits and vegetables: Eating at least five portions of fruits and vegetables a day will reduce the risk of heart disease possible due to the high amount of antioxidants present in these foods. Antioxidants help prevent the LDL cholesterol from oxidising, which prevents plaque from building up on the insides of the walls of the arteries. Today, there is an ever-growing body of research showing that the epidemic of diseases associated with the Western diet - cancer, heart disease, depression, and more - might be curtailed simply by modifying our diet and lifestyle choices. So, in order to maintain a healthy heart and body, make these simple dietary changes your first step to lowering your cholesterol. oliveandnaomi@yahoo.co.uk lower your cholesterol naturally with food! The Good Life 2.0 community resilience in a changing world 40 By Davie Philip In this Good Life 2.0 column, over the last two years, I have introduced a number of strategies and initiatives that I think could help us thrive, not just survive, in these changing times. I have been exploring community resilience, which is all about fi nding a positive way to face change – together. What I would like to look at in this issue is how we can collaborate to build our resilience around food. How can we eat healthily, inexpensively and, at the same time, engage with our community and support local food producers? Building our resilience around food has to start with growing some of it ourselves. Planting, tending, harvesting and eating your own vegetables are the fi rst steps to regaining control in an uncertain world. The uptake in allotments, the popularity of community gardens and the growth of Grow It Yourself Ireland - whose vision is for a world where home-grown food is the norm - show that more and more of us are now ‘digging for victory’. Shop- ping in a farmer’s market or a food co-op supports local producers, but is also benefi - cial to the local economy and strengthens community connections. Procuring our food and eating are convivial activities that are at the heart of a resilient community. I am currently the chair of the Cloughjordan Community Farm; a member owned and oper- ated Commu- nity Supported Agriculture (CSA) initiative in Tipperary. Using organic and biodynamic principles, we supply fresh seasonal vegetables to over 50 owner/ members. This exciting initiative has been in operation since 2008 on a small, mixed farm of 26 acres, which we lease with an additional 12 acres on the land of the ecovillage where about two thirds of the members now live. CSAs, which are popular across Europe and the US, are a new form of agriculture that can look very differently in different places. All include individuals supporting a farming operation where the growers and consumers share the risks and benefi ts of food production. This type of agriculture can help to build a healthy food culture and secure access to a local food supply. Our aim in Cloughjordan Commu- nity Farm is to increase our food resilience by making quality food available to as many people as possible. For as little as €40 per month, owner/members of the com- munity farm in Cloughjordan get access to a distribution point where twice a week they can pick up fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, plus delicious raw milk from our own Kerry cows is delivered daily. A ban on the sale of raw milk is about to be introduced; however as our farm is owned by the members and doesn’t sell anything, that ban will not apply to us. As a community, we have explored the health risks and benefi ts of unpasteurised milk extensively. Some of us have been experimenting, making the most delicious mozzarella and ricotta cheeses from it, and have held workshops to teach the rest of the community how. Small quantities of pork, beef and lamb are supplied to members at certain times throughout the year. Those desir- ing larger amounts take part in our ‘meat shares’ programme. I have invested in a quarter share of a pig and I am looking forward to chops and rashers. We have achieved a lot on our com- munity farm, but we do face challenges, one of which is making the CSA fi nancially viable. A few of the things we are research- ing to help us do this include introducing agritourism offerings and training courses in resilient agriculture systems. In associa- tion with the ecovillage, and Cultivate and Feasta who are both based in Cloughjordan, we plan to host a number of hands-on courses in subjects around food production, seed saving, nutritional resilience, Perma- culture and events for those interested in setting up and maintaining CSA initia- tives. Learning experiences are already being offered to school groups, which are coordinated by the local Sarah Baker Cookery School and through our successful Wwoofer programme. Wwoofers (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) are volunteers from countries all around the world that provide labour. In exchange, they are able to learn about, and experience fi rst-hand, sustain- able ways of living and farming. Our Wwoofers are accommodated at Django’s Hostel, which is located in the heart of the ecovillage and makes volunteering in Cloughjordan very attractive to Wwoofers from all over the world. Farm owner/members don’t have to work on the farm, but many, of course, do. Some work voluntarily in different areas of farm activity, such as distribution, educa- tion and membership, and almost everyone gets involved in the meitheal work parties which take place regularly. Currently, we employ three part time food producers and our objective is to create more meaning- ful livelihoods on the farm. Check out the Cloughjordan Community Farm on Facebook and follow the tweets of our three food producers. We have spent a lot of time thinking a community supported harvest

about food in Cloughjordan. The ecovillage is developing an edible landscape around the houses. There are allotments, commu- nity gardens, 100 heritage Irish apple trees from Irish Seed Savers, and a forest garden is being planned. A new wood fi red bakery, built and operated by Joe Fitzmaurice of Blazing Salads, has just opened, and earlier this summer, ‘Totally Tipperary,’ a celebra- tion of local food and culture was held on the lawn of Cloughjordan House. This festi- val attracted food bloggers, celebrity chefs, and lovers of artisan culinary delights from across Ireland. Community supported agriculture systems are a powerful way to develop a community’s resilience around food. There are, however, emerging examples of other community supported initiatives that can do the same in other areas. Community supported breweries, bakeries and restau- rants are popping up all over the place. The Old Crown in Cumbria is the UK’s fi rst community owned pub. It is owned by a co-operative of more than one hundred local people dedicated to preserving the character of the pub. Recently, the UK government announced a new £3.3m programme providing support for up to 50 communities to set up and run community- owned pubs over the next three years. One of my favourite examples is FC United of Manchester, which is a com- munity owned football club. FC United is democratically owned and run by its 3200 members. Community owned energy com- panies are also gaining popularity in the UK. Hundreds of residents in Totnes have invested in the energy security of their community by buying shares in TRESOC, the Totnes Renewable Energy Society. In Lewes, residents are buying shares in the UK’s fi rst community-owned solar power station. These community-owned energy companies secure local energy supply and are also benefi cial to the community fi nancially. In this changing world we fi nd ourselves in, which will quite likely be characterised by unpredictability and sur- prise, it will be advisable to do more locally, and to provide a lot more for ourselves. Community supported agriculture can help us do this and develop the resilience of our communities around food. The CSA model is now being adapted to help procure many of our other essential needs. As well as securing much needed local jobs, these initiatives are actually bringing communi- ties together and can help us break through to signifi cantly greater levels of resilience. Davie Philip runs the Community Resilience programme at Cultivate and is a resident of the Cloughjordan Ecovillage. He concieved and directed the Powerdown Show, a ten part TV show which has now been screened in over 10 countries. ‘Surfi ng the Waves of Change’, a new Cultivate short fi lm which he has produced introduces the concept of community resilience and can be seen at www.cultivate.ie “community supported breweries, bakeries and restaurants are popping up all over the place.”

By Hans Weiland Many years back, after weeding in the polytunnel, I “discovered” Chickweed actu- ally can be eaten, and after talking to my wife Gaby, a trained herbalist, found out it is very high in Vitamin C. It also contains protein and is as high in vitamin A as the ‘superfood’ Broccoli. From then on, I gave Chickweed a place in the garden and it now features in our salads, and more recently in Green Smoothies. I can tell a similar story about Fat Hen, a weed one of my neighbours complained about when he found it between his strawberries. A bit of reading up on it made for interesting news: it’s High in Magnesium and Calcium, Vitamin A and C and is higher in protein than most vegetables. Eating Fat Hen Gazpacho was delicious! We already use Dandelion for homemade lemonade and eat the young leaves in salads. …but for me the weed of 2011 is Silverweed. This year, I found myself literally stumbling over Silverweed, especially on the footpath of our herb garden, and that triggered another “discovery”. (Meaning I discovered it for myself and want to share it with you readers. I’m not claiming any credit!) Silverweed (Latin: Potentilla anse- rina, Irish: Brisgean) is actually a very clever weed and if pulled will snap above the root and readily re-root. It reproduces itself by creeping across the soil and rooting from its stem in the same manner as a straw- berry reproduces through runners. If it has invaded the vegetable patch, it has to be weeded out completely like dock or nettles. The leaves of Silverweed are very soft and silky, and the underside is quite silvery in appearance, giving the plant it’s most common name. Silverweed is a favourite food of cattle, horses, goats, pigs and geese (anser is the latin word for goose, hence the name); only sheep decline it. Gaby tells me that in modern herbal medicine the whole herb is used, dried, for its mildly astringent and tonic action; and Maude Grieve, in her 1931 work, Modern Herbal, says an infusion of Silverweed, sweetened with honey, constitutes an excellent gargle for a sore throat. Not discounting the medicinal properties and uses of Silverweed, I was more interested in the nutritional value, and wanted to find out if it can be eaten and how it tastes. Some books on wild foods mentioned that the starchy roots of Silverweed root can be boiled and eaten and taste a bit like parsnips, but I tell you I would much rather boil parsnips than digging thin and fiddly Silverweed roots. The leaves are ok but not as nice as Chickweed, so, back to using it in green smoothies or in salads. Silverweed has the highest content of vitamin C of all the weeds. Courtesy of Gaby, here is a wonder- ful recipe for Broccoli Salad that uses Silverweed in the mayonnaise. www.theorganiccentre.ie positive foodthe wonder of weeds Vitamin C in wild foods 43 Broccoli Salad 1-2 heads broccoli (or mix of broccoli and cauliflower) 1 small red onion, chopped finely Dressing: Raw cashew mayonnaise Cashews (soaked for a couple of hours, rinsed and drained) 2 tbsp lemon juice Pinch of sea salt 1 tbsp chopped spring onions 125 ml water 1 tsp honey or agave syrup 1 tsp cider vinegar A pinch or two of cayenne pepper Bunch of Silverweed chopped finely Blend all ingredients without the Silverweed in a high speed blender until smooth. Add the Silverweed and blend very briefly. Directions: Cut up broccoli florets and/or cauliflower into bite-sized pieces, leaving just a little stem. Add the chopped red onion and cashew mayo and mix well. Either serve immediately or cover and marinate for a couple of hours in the fridge. Decorate with edible flowers like nasturtiums, calendula or heartsease, or a couple of rose petals and some red onion rings just before serving. Enjoy!

positive food As the wheel turns, seasons change and time moves on. For me, Autumn is the beginning of another cycle. The fruits of our Sum- mer energy have blossomed and been harvested. Now is the time to begin the inward journey to the stillness of Winter. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Autumn is the time of the corporeal soul, the physical body and its boundaries. In this way, it governs the lungs and large intestine. Breath is our constant physical connection to the outside world; it is processed through our lungs, and through the large intestine we release what no longer serves us. The lung and large Intestine are about taking in and letting go, whilst keep- ing a strong healthy sense of self - loving the skin we are in. With this in mind, this first recipe is aimed at keeping the bacteria in the large intestine healthy and active. All mushrooms are great at boosting the immune system and reducing fat and cholesterol levels in the blood. Shitake mushrooms especially are said to be “a source or interferon - a protein which appears to induce an immune response against cancer and viral diseases.” Risotto, if you haven’t cooked it before, can seem daunting, with the exactness of quantities and specific timing, but I find if I prepare all the ingredients before, and have them to hand, it is really just a question of standing, stirring and adding. qoh rdn mg smltkjmet smmujlf By Joanne Faulknerautumnrecipes

Perfect comfort food on an autumnal evening. At this time of year, our immune system is really under pressure. All seasons can appear in one day, which can compromise our defences. Carrageen Moss is great at soothing and protecting the lungs. It’s an age old traditional remedy, and any food which resembles the organ its treating has to be a winner. Carrageen Jelly 20g Carrageen Moss 1 pint water Flavour of choice Rinse the moss clean and place it in a saucepan. Let it soak in the water for 10 minutes and then bring it barely to the boil to gently simmer for about 30 minutes until the moss has dissolved. Sometimes not all the moss dissolves, so strain it and at this point add the flavour of your choice; perhaps the juice of an orange or a lemon and some honey (My kids, of course, like blackcurrant cordial). Then pour it into a mould and leave to set in the fridge. Of course, for this time of year, I couldn’t leave without talking onions. They are a fantastic vegetable, full of sulphur, which is great for carrying toxins and heavy metals away from the body. They gently warm and move blood in the body and can decrease catarrh build up. Just think of how your mucus membranes react when you cut an onion. They get all those juices flowing. Home Made Cough Syrup ½ onion, sliced ½ onion, whole 5-7 sprigs of fresh thyme 150ml honey Pour the honey over the sliced half of the onion and thyme (in a jug) and let it sit and steep for about 20 mins. Take 1-2 tsp of this steeped honey at least 3 times a day. Discard the mixture after 2 days and hopefully you won’t have to make more as the virus will have left the body. The other half of the onion you can leave under your bed overnight. The old wives tail says it draws and holds the virus and bacteria to itself. In the morning, don’t eat it, throw it away. Have a healthy, happy passage through this transitional Autumn time; keep up that all over glow. Joanne is a fully qualified Shiatsu Practitioner who specializes in food and diet. The Dashi broth and the vegetable stock, must be kept at a gentle simmer so as not to interrupt the cooking of the rice when adding.) 1200ml vegetable stock 120g parsley, chopped Juice of 1 lemon 60g Parmesan, grated Salt and pepper to taste Melt half the butter and half the oil. When they are hot, add the onions and soften them on a medium heat for 5 minutes. Next, add the garlic, finely sliced shitake mushrooms and half the parsley, softly frying for another 5 minutes before adding the rice. Stir it for a few minutes so that all the grains are coated with buttery juices. Now add the Dashi broth, again stirring constantly until it has been absorbed by the rice. Do the same with the stock adding a ladle full (approx 100 ml) at a time. After 15-20 minutes, the stock should have been completely absorbed leaving a creamy sauce in which the soft rice sits. Stir in the remaining butter, oil, parsley, parmesan and lemon juice. 45

short & sweet 47 Our soul communicates to us through our thoughts, feel- ings and emotions. In times of silence, it is our soul that speaks to us through the small quiet voice within. As children, we are taught go with our logic rather than listen to our feel- ings - often paying more attention to outer authority figures instead of our ‘inner authority’. Sometimes events occur in our lives and our inner safety and trust is com- promised. A deep sense of fear results. Fear is the language of the ego and disconnects us from our soul. Longstanding issues can be messages from our soul as to the fact that we are disconnected from it. They relate to fundamental aspects of who we are as a person and spiritual being. We struggle between what our ego ‘wants’ in order to be safe and what our soul ‘needs’ to experience for our spiritual evolution. Often we become ‘too human’, avoiding the truth of our soul and listening to messages from our ego. We yearn for a sense of belonging – a sense of connection - but get stuck in the disconnection or illu- sion. We have stopped living a life of potential with trust and love. When we are con- nected to our soul, we are more emotionally authentic, more fully connected to our intuition, our purpose here on Earth and the truth of who we are. We reclaim gifts that are inherently ours. For help in reclaiming your soul’s gifts, call 0871492338 or visit www.michellehardwick.com Soul Connection By Michelle Hardwick

short & sweet By Emma Tamplin Did you have a summer of love, or did you have a summer of dealing with a lack of love? Either way, we are all reassessing our relationships. Some relationships that we thought would last forever are gone and so many new relationships are beginning or about to begin. As the earth is shifting and changing in its consciousness, so are we. We are becoming aware of what we want and we are finding ways to bring that in. The fastest way to get what you want is to learn how to apply the Law of Attrac- tion. Without this law and spiritual knowledge, you are shooting your desires into the dark. When you go out socially, do you know what others are picking up from you? If you keep attracting in what you don’t want, it is time for you to change your energy output. This signal is your point of attraction and it affects all your relation- ships. So many of us carry around the hurt and baggage of a past relationship and this prevents us from moving into new love. We can do something about this now. Old patterns need to be taken out so that we can become aligned with our own soul. With a little soul work, we start to meet people who are like us and who feed our spirit and then we get a whole new perspective into our lives - one that is fun and alive. www.attractinlove.com Self-Love By Sharyn Cunneen Love. We all want it. We all have it already. We all are it. But, we don’t seem to know it. The way to remember this and to have what we are all searching for is to give it to ourselves. Self-love. It seems like an obvious choice. The reason we have forgotten that we are loved, and are love, is because our mind plays tricks on us. It does this to separate us from each other and to try to make us feel important. As we can’t turn our minds off, another option is to watch it, listen to it and love what is inside you unconditionally. Love is all embracing and accepting of everything. In Love, there are no judgements. Being gentle with yourself and the opinions of your self is self-love. In Love, everything is OK. That includes all perceived negative emotions such as anger, guilt, jealousy, etc. We are human, and it is perfectly OK to experience them all. Parents love their children unconditionally. No matter what the child does, the parent continues to love. They can understand the child’s innocence. You are that child. You are innocent. Choosing Love over the judgements of your mind will bring you back to you inner state of joy. Showing yourself this type of unconditional Love can allow you to feel safe in the world, and enables you to give this unconditional Love to others. Love yourself and see yourself evolve in Joy. www.howtobehappy.tv Facebook: I Choose Happiness Our Changing Relationships 48

In my experience, the time honoured tradi- tion of healing with herbs is effective in clinical practice, and traditional claims are increasingly supported by research. One of the real strengths of herbal medicine is the fl exibil- ity of using herbs alongside pharmaceutical medicine, energy medicine or physical therapies. Herbs are excellent at supporting the body’s healing or even supporting its protective responses in an integrated manner. Patients often delay seeing a herbalist until they have exhausted the hoops and scopes of hospital diagnosis. As a herb- alist, such knowledge regarding your condition is welcome, but the earlier you attend, and the less entrenched the symptoms, the easier it will be to heal the body. Patients that I look after over a long period of time, through different medical conditions, eventually realise this. After a while, they attend saying, “Remember how I felt before I got sick four years ago? Well I feel like that now. Is there something I can take to stay well.” They realise that life is better for avoiding illness, rather than treatment and recovery. Herbs have the constituent building blocks, the vibrational energy and long established evidence of safety and effectiveness to trust for holistic healing. Normal physiology can be compared to the sweetest music, blending ten symphony orchestras with a brilliant conductor. And herbs are there to help keep us in tune with ourselves. www.healthandherbs.ie 50 active balance clinic www.farinfrared.eu t: 0872711215 In Ireland for over 25 years Amatsu is a Natural Japanese Therapy it is a gentle therapy that realigns bones muscles and ligaments. This has in part been helped by the increased accessibility of Yoga classes. Opened in a two-fl oor studio space on Pearse Street in the centre of Dublin during the winter of 2009, the Open Mind Yoga studio’s goal was to not only help share the benefi ts of yoga, but also to show how Yoga was for people from all different walks of life. Initially, they experimented with a timetable of donation- only drop-in classes to tempt those who may have been unsure about giving Yoga a try. These classes proved very popular, leading the studio to switch to a fuller timetable offering a larger selection of classes, still at affordable rates. The continued growth of the studio allowed them to open a second studio on Temple Lane South in Temple Bar in May of this year. This studio is the largest Yoga studio space in Dublin. The studio building also includes a soon-to-be-opened tea room/ café, and alcohol and drug-free venue, called The Green Temple. On Saturday evenings, The Green Temple runs a regular alcohol and drug-free club night called DanceWave. And both studios now offer a wide range of yoga classes, along with workshops featuring some of the best-known national and international Yoga teachers. www.openmindyoga.ie

By Tom Colton Using a small device about the size of a coffee maker, a 37 year old Japanese company, Enagic, has figured out a way to change the molecular structure of your water. I was first introduced to this Kangen water by a friend of mine. My son, Ben, was suffering from a rash on his body for which the doctor had sent him to see a specialist. My friend said that her own son had had a rash and that she treated the rash with Kangen 2.5pH water. I decided to treat the left side of my son’s arms and legs with this water (and not the right side) to see if it would work. After 2 days of spraying the rash with the water 3 times a day, the rash disappeared on the left side and remained on the right side. We then treated both sides and, after a couple of days, the rash disappeared completely. I then got some of the Kangen 9.5pH water, which is a drinking water. The effects of the water were so great on how I felt that we bought a machine and even brought the machine on holidays to Portugal. At the push of a button, an unlimited supply of seven different waters can be instantly dispensed: 11.5pH - Eco-friendly Cleaner. » 7.0 pH to 9.5 pH - Drinking Waters. » 6.0pH - Facial Toner. » 2.5 pH - Eco-friendly Sanitizer. » www.kangenireland.com Water of Life Gina’s Redemption By Peter Conry Gina returned from Croagh Patrick with psoriasis. She’d only gone to see the faithful do their thing. And then, on that hill, she tripped and rolled, and rolled. “The next day I had cuts, bruises... and psoriasis”. 20 years on, she’d grown used to it. It’d worsen if her children had exams. It’d ease on a holiday in the sun. She used to buy monster 120g tubes of strong corticosteroid creams. She’d even gotten used to bursting big purple blisters on her feet before bed so she’d fit into her shoes for work the next day. By then, she was working in a Dun Laoghaire pharmacy that offers on-site food intolerance testing. She hesitated initially - her doctors said psoriasis wasn’t food-related, and it costs €100. How- ever, after a skin flare-up, she had her blood tested. 2 hours later, her report said she had high IgG antibody levels against cow’s milk, moderate against wheat and gluten, and a few borderline reactions. “I don’t drink milk,” was her first reaction - but she did like lattes, butter, milk in her tea and, especially, cheese. She did a dairy and gluten-free 3-month Elimination Diet. “I could hear the cheese talking to me from the fridge, but the diet really worked.” Her psoriasis went away and she can even get away with the odd cheese meal. “You have to be 80-90% good,” she said. You can get same-day, affordable food intolerance blood testing from many nutritional therapists (NTOI.ie) and in selected pharmacies. www.nutricentric.com 53

By Michael Tanner I was teaching Yoga and running a centre in the UK. Then, after I moved to Ireland, I started Eireventure Paragliding School. I also started Second Byte, selling second hand Apple computers to provide income on rainy days. Alan Dare, who had a Health Food shop in Bantry, had found Grapefruit Seed Extract to be the best way of dealing with Candida, and would encourage his customers to try it. Two customers wrote a book about it in German, which was very successful. The publisher sent them a disc with an English translation which they could not open as they had a Mac, which I had sold them, and the disc was in a different format. They gave me the disc and I ended up rewriting the English version, which gave me lots of scientific information and some money to invest. That’s how the Aisling Foundation, who specialise in Grapefruit Seed Extract, got started. Aisling is our youngest daughter and is Down Syndrome. We now have a range of Grapefruit Seed Extract products and a business that started in a one room shack and now exports all over Europe. The realisation that Life guides and supports us, in so far as we allow it to, is my core belief; and I thank Life for providing me with such a wonderful gift that enables me to make money using a waste product that helps people to become more healthy. www.aislingfoundation.com What’s so Super about Superfoods?
