WIDELY regarded as an inspirational and highly en- tertaining speaker, Erin Brockovich is a straight talker and believes in the importance of what she calls ‘stick- to-it-ive-ness’ – an attribute which has helped her to achieve great success in her campaigning work. She is best known for her work with the law firm, Masry & Vititoe. She began an investigation which eventually established that residents of Hinkley, California had been exposed to toxic Chromium 6 during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s as a result of a leak into the groundwa- ter from the nearby Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Compressor Station. In 1996, as a result of the largest direct action lawsuit of its kind, spearheaded by Brocko- vich and Ed Masry, the utility company paid the largest toxic tort injury settlement in U.S. history: $333 million in damages to more than 600 Hinkley residents. Subject of the 2000 oscar-winning film of the same name, Erin Brockovich, will visit Dublin during September 2008 thanks to Ireland’s family-owned and operated organic dairy farm, Glenisk. Brockovich will address an audience at University College Dublin, Belfield, at 1pm on Satur- day, 20 September. The event is being held by Glenisk to celebrate Ireland’s National Organic Week, which runs from 15-21 September 2008. Tickets for the event, which is open to the public, cost Â27.65 and are available from www.ticketmaster.ie or by telephoning 0818 719300. Pro- ceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the GM-free Ire- land Network, the NGO which campaigns to keep geneti- cally modified organisms out of Irish agriculture and food. InDublin,Erin Brockovich will speak on a range of topics including the power of one individual to create lasting change, the importance of truth-telling and transparency in high places, the feminine approach to tackling problems, the role of organic food and the environment and the future of organic food. Speaking about the event, Vincent Cleary, ma- naging director of Glenisk said: “We are delighted to welcome Erin Brockovich to Dublin for what we know will be an engaging, thought-provoking and entertaining event. At Glenisk, we share Ms Brocko- vich’s passion for environmental activism and we ad- mire her commitment to pursuing justice for others.” Michael O’Callaghan, co-ordinator of GM Free Ire- land Network also commented: “Erin Brockovich ins- pires us all to take personal responsibility for environ- ment and health issues like patented GM seeds, which threaten our food and farming future. Please support the GM-free Ireland campaign by coming to this event.” Further information is available at www.glenisk.com. Erin Brockovich GLENISK PRESENTS … 6

AT the College of Naturopathic Medicine, all students are given an in depth knowledge of how to use food as medicine and medicine as food. In training the question always arises whether naturopaths and nutritional therapists should en- courage all their patients to eat organically. Does organic food confer better health benefits than non-organic? If so, in what way is it better? There are 3 main issues, nutrient levels, pes- ticide residues and ethical and environmental issues. NUTRIENT LEVELS In general the research is very confusing with some very well designed studies showing higher vitamin and mineral levels in organic food and other studies showing no difference. However in a recent £12m four-year project it was found that organic fruit and vegetables contained as much as 40% more antioxidants, which scientists be- lieve can cut the risk of cancer and heart disease, the biggest killers in the western world. The organic produce also had higher levels of bene- ficial minerals such as iron and zinc. Professor Carlo Leifert, the co-ordinator of the European Union-funded project, said the differences were so marked that organic produce would help to increase the nutrient intake of people not eating the recommended five portions a day of fruit and vegetables. This study bodes well in influencing government policies to support organic growing but more research needs to be done to show conclusive results. PESTICIDE RESIDUES Consuming more organic food may be the way to improve one’s nutrient intake, but it also may be the safest. Non-organic food proponents in the food industry suggest that pesticide residues in foods are known to be safe on the basis of to- tal diet surveys that supposedly find the levels of pesticide residue in our food to be very low and within acceptable safely limits. However the latest annual report on pesticide residues in the UK showed that about half the fresh fruit and vegetable samples tested contained pesticide residues. The long-term effects of pesticide re- sidues and the implications of different mixes of chemicals on human health have not been established. Also, a number of studies show that when nitrates, a common element of artificial fertilisers, are converted to nitrosamines they may be carcinogenic. In terms of risk reduction from foods we recommend as a training provider Is organic better?
9 PROFESSIONALLY HEALTHY If you are interested in eating for optimum health, the College of Naturopa- thic Medicine are holding a one day event in Dublin. Saturday 20th September 10am-5pm For more information phone 01 235 3094 that it is always best to eat food produced as na- turally as possible, harvested locally and eaten in the minimum time possible since being picked. Our farmer’s markets provide this service very well. There is so much to be learnt in terms of the life-force of foods and how it effects us but we all know the sweetness of eating fruit fres- hly picked from the tree and unsprayed lettuce straight from the vegetable patch. Most of us would agree it tastes significantly better. ETHICAL ISSUES AND ENVIRONMENT Conventional farming and agricultural practices are quite damaging for soil and the environment. Tons and tons of pesticides and fertilisers are being washed down into rivers; the soil is being eroded by the intensive and aggressive farming methods that we often use. These chemicals are then being reabsorbed through the food and back into our systems. Earth pollution and ani- mal welfare are important and sensitive issues and those with awareness of how we are treating the planet and our animals are choosing to eat organic produce, which is grown with considera- tion towards both. The biggest challenge facing all of us is to support and encourage each other to eat food high in life force, high in nutrient density and as unprocessed as possible. Though the arguments are not conclusive eating organically seems to support this. It is vibrationally not possi- ble. When you focus upon the problems of others, you diminish your ability to help them. People believe that you’ve got to focus upon the problem in order to find a solution. And we say, no solution ever comes forth from your place of focusing on the problem. They are two entirely different vibrations. There are those who believe that the world is getting more and more desperate. We are here to tell you that the world is getting better and better, and better, in every day— and in this moment—for everyone who insists on focusing there. If all you did was just look for things to apprecia- te you would live a joyous, spectacular life. If there was nothing else that you ever came to understand other than just look for things to appreciate, it’s the only tool you would ever need to predominantly hook you up with who you really are. That’s all you’d need.” Abraham Hicks 11 By Patrick Bridgeman
Angel Delight 12 ALL children are born with the ability to see Angels, but most of us lose that ability by the time we go to school. Lorna Byrne, however, never lost the ability, and conti- nues to communicate with all of our Angels for the benefit of everyone. We caught up with her as she touched down on her way home from signing a major publishing deal with Doubleday (The Da Vinci Code) for the international release of her debut book “Angels in my Hair”. Patrick: Does everybody on the planet have a Guardian Angel? Lorna: No doubt. I have never seen a human being, man, woman, or child, at all in my life, not having a Guardian Angel. Even a person who would say they have no religion or they don’t believe in God at all, they have a Guardian Angel. It doesn’t make any difference what religion you are, God is right there inside of you. That is what your soul is, and that’s the part of you that doesn’t die. That’s the part of you that has a conscious mind, and that’s what you take with you when you die. Patrick: What happens when you die? Lorna: You don’t actually die. You live forever, it is only your body that dies, but humanly that is very hard for a mother or father or brother or sister or aunt or uncle to accept. We have such emotions because we love who had died, but sometimes we are happy that someone has died, and we know that they are physically not suffering anymore. But you can be sure they’re still alive. Patrick: So, what does happen to the soul when it leaves the body? Lorna: It goes to the place we call Heaven. I don’t know exactly where it is, but I have been there a few times. It’s hard to explain. You know the way even when someone dies, sometimes the soul comes back to help someone? Well, even when they come back to our world, they’re actually still in Heaven. Patrick: Are you talking about coming back in a non-physical form or in another physical body? Lorna: In a non-physical form. It’s when the soul comes back as a soul. Somebody might say, I could feel my Grandmother with me, or my child beside me helping me through the loneliness. Patrick: Do those souls ever come back into another physical body, like the idea of reincarnation? Lorna: Yes, but I have to smile, I don’t believe as often as we would like to believe, because you have to remember Heaven is a place where when a soul goes there, it really doesn’t want to leave, but it has to. So, every time one dies one doesn’t come back straight away. But people do come back at particular times for reasons that maybe you or I would say, “But why for that reason?” It’s not as simple or as clear cut as we would like and we can’t tell God and the Angels what we think should be and we can’t tell them what to do or what to say beyond all of that. I have to laugh when someone says that to me, you know, you just can’t. Patrick: Is there a balance between what Humans can control and what God and the Angels control? Lorna: There is a balance, and I think that humanly we are given most of the balance in order for us to live our life, and in order for all religions to have that choice. We have been given our Guardian Angel as a gift, plus we have been given this Earth which is a living planet. It’s living as well, and it’s a gift, and so is the Universe around us, but before we leave we have to learn how to be kinder and nicer to each other, how to look after our planet. We are all connected. That is why it’s so important that each person plays their part. That’s why everybody is special, no matter what they do. Whether you’re a sweeper sweeping the street, or you’re a teacher, or you’re a businessman, we can’t manage and survive without each other. So we have to let go and realise that material things we all need, but we don’t need the amount that we’re grasping, and we need to share more, and we need to look after this beautiful planet that’s doing it’s best to look after us. “Angels in my Hair” is now available from all good bookstores. 14 Drive time IN today’s Ireland, choosing the most efficient and sustaina- ble mode of transport is a tricky business. In an ideal world, most of our needs would be within walking distance and for everything else, a clean, efficient public transport network. However, I think we can all agree that the situation is at best, far from ideal. For those not served by public transport, where walking and cycling is not a practical option, the car remains the most accessible option. For someone looking for more ethical and sustainable mo- toring the choice is not clear. There are a myriad of options, from hybrid to fully electric, bio-fuel to A-class CO2 ratings and this is before the ethical practices of the manufacturer are considered at all. e.g. Under the present regulations, a new small diesel car with low CO2 emission may come with tax benefits that give it an attractive purchase price and low annual road tax. However, diesels thrive on longer journeys and may suffer mechanical failure much sooner from the short journeys that small cars are typically used for. In addition, their harmful emissions may be higher than the manufacturers quoted fi- gures when used in an urban or suburban environment. One should also consider the embodied energy of the vehicle. Does the purchase of a new “low emission” actual- ly reduce the impact of one’s driving? Perhaps the energy involved in making the new car, along with that used to recycle the old one, eats into this saving significantly. The option of running on a bio-fuel may seem an obvious solution for cleaner greener motoring but with food shortages affecting millions of people around the world this is a subject of much heated debate. The benefits of produ- cing bio-fuels in an enlightened and sustainable way can be overshadowed by the very general argument that burning food is bad, full stop. One fact rarely mentioned when producing fuel from indigenous oil seed rape is that the fuel is actually a bi-product of the whole process. The main product by volume is a protein rich animal feed. This offsets the need to dedicate land for growing crops for animal feed, in turn freeing up land for human food. Some might consider the ethics of the car manufacturer as equally or more important than the emissions of their pro- ducts. Does the company treat its workers well? How much recycled material is in their products? How easily recyclable are their products when they come to the end of their life? Do they operate in countries with oppressive regimes? The deeper you delve the more questions arise. A good resource for finding this information is a website such as www.ethi- calconsumer.org It soon becomes apparent that there is no straightforward answer to the enigma of cleaner motoring. The easiest, cheapest and coincidentally greenest thing we can do is think about being more efficient with our use of the car. Steps such as defensive driving, combining journeys and car sharing (www.gocar.ie) can dramatically reduce the cost and impact of our motoring, without having to make drastic lifes- tyle changes or spend a cent. EVEANNEKELLYCarer I think that people come to the city to be more social with their spirituality, because other people are a reflection of them- selves, it brings up more chal- lenges in them. When you’re living in a more rural setting its much more introspective, it’s much more within the self, but living in the city brings up much more of your issues and helps you deal with them. Also living in the city is a really good environment for experimen- ting with your spirituality be- cause there’s so much opportu- nity to go to different therapies and groups and meet different people who are interested in exploring their spirituality and have different ideas about what that is. I love living in the city. I love healing more and more each day and meeting people who challenge me. and the City 16 ISEMusician For me spirituality is found in being present. In that instant of noticing the beauty. In those fleeting moments during my day when I feel a connection to something deeper. Someti- mes it comes easy to me and I find myself in that expansive space and sometimes I actively work at it, like a meditation, only on the move. The easiest way for me to fall into the mo- ment is when I am singing or absorbed in music in some way, I don’t have to make an effort to leave the running commen- tary behind! But I can’t always be doing that! Our chattering monkey mind can be more easily awed into silence when it’s faced with the wonder of nature. But in the city, you sometimes have to look a bit harder for the beauty and make more of an effort to find a quiet space. In Dublin I find those quiet spaces anywhere from a bus ride to a walk on Killiney beach. And the beauty, well that’s everywhere, from the way we say thank you to the bus driver as we get off the bus, to literally smelling a rose ove- rhanging the pavement from a garden. And not forgetting that beautiful group hug at the end of a Buddha Bag meeting. ;-) www.isemusic.com OISINBYRNEArtist My experience of Dublin, personally, has been one of connection. I feel a huge connection to the Irish spirit(s), and to Irish spirituality. The richness, the mischievousness, the earthiness, the playfulness, the sparky-ness, the aliveness and the interconnection here in Dublin are brighter and ful- ler for me than in any other city I have visited. Here I am at home: connected to a web of beings and friends who are diverse and beyond compare. Here I find a spirituality of wild laughter and freedom along with a deep connection to the earth and to nature. Here I jump daily into the icy Irish sea, and emerge fresh and full of fast breath, my body tingling into new being. Here too, I see sparkling networks of people, joining together with common feelings and thoughts: com- mon positivities. These are a powerful and valuable point of power, mixing and melding dif- ferent traditions of spirituality: mixing and melding the very best of their own spirits to in- ter-connect and inter-act. www.oisinbyrne.com RORYFAITH-FIELDMusician I’ve lived in Dublin for years but I grew up in Australia. When I was a kid I liked sear- ching for buried treasure but never liked getting my hands dirty, so I became a songwriter. I decided Dublin was the place I needed to be, and synchronis- tic happenings kept me here. My drug fuelled adolescence in Sydney left me da- zed and confused, and connecting with my fa- mily story in Ireland (I was named after Rory O’Con- nor, who was my Grandmo- ther’s Cousin) gave me a new sense of place and purpose. Songs are my gateway to that difficult to define Source, othe- rwise known as God. I’m not sure who she is but I’m happy she brought me here. I like tea you know. www.faithfield.com Spirituality

ASK anyone in Ireland for directions and they’ll probably get you from one side of the country to the other using pubs alone. Drinking is en- trenched in our lifestyles and in our culture. But how much is a drink too much? And when do we draw that all important line in the sand as far as our liver health is concerned? With very few symptoms, liver disease can go undetected until it is too late. But now, for the first time in Ireland, a home blood test called LiverCheck will aim to give drinkers early indications regarding the po- tential onset of liver disease. The liver is a hardy organ and acts as a distribution centre for all the goodness the body requires. Its regeneration properties make the liver an amazing organ, yet habitual strain from drink over a number of years puts people at risk. Previously, liver disease was the domain of men in their 60s but now the age is coming down and even more women than ever before are showing signs of alcohol-related liver damage. The LiverCheck test is the crucial first stage for those concerned about their liver health and the test offers intervention and advice to personally take control of your lifestyle. This revolutionary new way of testing is a life-saving breakthrough made accessible through York- Test Laboratories. WHAT’S INVOLVED? It couldn’t be easier. You take a simple finger- prick blood test in the comfort of your own home and post back to YorkTest Laboratory. The easy-to-understand results are returned within fifteen working days and enable you to make an informed assessment of your current condition. THE EVIDENCE Your laboratory results offer a unique colour-co- ded LiverCheck score based on the leakage of liver enzymes (ALT & AST) into your blood. A recent study from America concluded that those patients with higher readings of ALT and AST enzymes in the blood had higher rates of early age mortality. The complete test offers… Clear instructions on how to submit your blood sample. Easy to interpret results. Results guidebook to allow you to implement any recommended advice. Lifestyle Audit which allows you to identify the risk factors that may be affecting your liver health. The knowledge that the test is clinical, convenient and confidential, with no records ever appearing on medical notes or with your GP. Get involved today and get even more friendly with your liver. Are you leading what Thoreau called a life ‘of quiet desperation?’ It’s a sad fact that most of us are. This is because we carry around harmful beliefs, hurtful stories about ourselves that become insurmountable obstacles to joy and peace. We are imprisoned in our own minds. RealFreedom is about breaking this pattern of self-hate, about rec- ognising the lies in the stories we tell ourselves and about creating new stories, new beliefs of our true selves, our true potential for happiness. Does this seem impossible? Of course it does, because when you are trapped in patterns of self-recrimination, a tortured character in dysfunctional story, it is difficult to even imagine a way out. Sheila Babikian’s RealFreedom healing process focuses on precisely that: imagining a way out. By offering techniques for letting go of your damaging stories, and developing a new story for yourself, Sheila’s pow- erful process gives you real freedom from fear, sadness, loneliness and pain and puts you on the path to genuine, enduring happiness and love. The RealFreedom Method RealFreedom is about helping you to focus on NOW. Too often, our present is tortured by painful memories of the past, or hopeless longings for an unachievable future. The stories we tell ourselves about who we were, or who we believe we will become, trap us into a life of regret, anger and yearning. MANY of the skills that our grandparents took for granted have disappeared or are on the verge of being lost forever. This is partly due to the process of modernisation. In the last four decades we have mechanised and industrialised almost every system we depend on, and these systems are completely dependent on fossil fuels. As oil prices reach record highs and awareness of climate change sinks in, we will have to re- think how we do almost everything without the cheap and abundant oil that now underpins our society. Facilitating a ‘great reskilling’ is the 8th step in the Transition process which I introduced in last month’s new and improved Positive Life. When you consider the skills we have lost or the new skills we will need to cope with the changes ahead, a reskilling is becoming very necessary. In a nutshell the Transition process is about rebuilding community resilience in the face of climate change and energy uncertainty. One of the most useful things a Transition project can do is to reverse the “great des- killing” which has taken place over the last 40 years by offering training. Many Transi- tion Initiatives around the country are of- fering an ongoing series of workshops and courses. If we are to respond to peak oil and climate change by moving to a lower energy future and relocalising our commu- nities, then we’ll need many of the skills that our grandparents took for granted. Essential skills many have lost include the growing and harvesting of fruit and vegetables, fixing things, building things and the storing and preserving of food. How we eat seasonally again is also a skill that most of us could do with a course on. New skills like ‘Permaculture’, which is a design system for creating sustainable hu- man environments, is something everyone could benefit from learning about. Cultivate’s activities and efforts to date have shown that there is an information gap around climate and energy issues, particu- larly in regard to adaptation measures and the responses we can make as individuals and communities. Cultivate’s ‘Skilling Up For Powerdown’ course provides students with the context of the global crises we face and offers pathways and a set of tools that will enable them and their communities to make an informed response. The course builds capacity for active citizenship at the local level and an awareness of our respon- sibilities as global citizens. In E.F. Schumacher’s classic book ‘Good Work’ he identifies three purposes of human work: to produce necessary and useful goods and services; to enable us to use and perfect our gifts and skills; and to serve, and collaborate with, other people, so as to “liberate ourselves from our inborn egocentricity.” Learning to do more with less will be es- sential in the years to come. Rediscovering lost abilities to solve problems and to work cooperatively alongside other people are essential skills we will have to nurture in a future that is rapidly approaching. Later this year, Cultivate proposes to examine the education we will need to res- pond to the challenges of sustainability in the face of climate change. This two-day event entitled, ‘Rethinking Education in the face of Climate Change’ will bring to- gether leading International and National education practitioners from the formal and informal sectors. Alliance SO, what is the Alliance for a New Humanity? I asked many people this same question and got a different answer every time. Mary Callaghan, the leader of the Alliance in Ireland, says that it is like a multi-faceted diamond that reflects what’s going on in the people who look at it. We’re all a part of it, whether we’ve signed up for it or not, and its only when we’re together that we can experience it in its entirety, like Life. On the surface it appears to me to be a global network of people from all regions of the world and all walks of life who are joined by a common vision; to strengthen and sustain an actively com- passionate humanity. They do this by connecting individuals and groups from all over the world, communicating with a global audience, inspiring positive change and supporting the action requi- red to bring about that change within our lifetime. Through their website, their newsletter and their Human Forums, they provide the space for real change to happen, for people to come together to make a difference, and to share their passion about creating a better world for all beings. However, the Alliance is more than just the sum of its parts. I believe that at its essence the Alliance is that magical extra something that is created when a group of individuals come to- gether for a single purpose. It’s the “extra” that’s needed to create change on a deeper level and a global scale. Another way of putting it is to say that the Alliance is not only the beating heart but also the Love that it feels. At a recent publicity event in Dublin, Deepak Chopra, one of the founding members of the Al- liance for a New Humanity, illustrated the nature of the Alliance in this way… As a caterpillar rea- ches the end of its life and its body starts to decay, various seemingly separate Imaginal Cells decide to group together and instead of dying, they form a new life form, a butterfly. Now, the various seemingly separate humans campaigning for po- sitive change around the world are being brought together by the Alliance for a New Humanity to form just that, a new humanity. Their mission is to connect people, who, through personal and social transformation, aim to build a just, peaceful, and sustainable world, reflecting the unity of all humanity. In fact, the basic tenet of the Alliance is a consciousness based on the inseparability of all life, i.e., that everything is connected and that therefore our well being is the well-being of everyone. So, why this mission now? Deepak feels that humanity is at a crossroads; where our future depends on how we deal with four trends, each enmeshed and interconnected with the others: do we choose war or non-violence, poverty or equity, environmental degradation or sustainability, discrimination or human rights? As always, the choice is ours. So what can you do to help? A great place to start is www.anhglobal.org which is the official website for the Alliance for a New Humanity. There you can share your passion with others from around the globe, make a difference in wha- tever way you can and be the change you wish to see in the world. Simply adding your name as a supporter of the Alliance increases the power of that “magical extra something” which will one day transform the world we live in and bring about a New Humanity. A recent survey in the United States indica- ted that more than 50% of people have had psychic experiences – and that is just coun- ting those people who would readily admit having such an experience to a stranger! The most common form of psychic experience is the precognitive dream, where the dreamer has a dream of unusual clarity. The dreamer remembers the dream and realises, either at the time or later, that it is foretelling an event that is about to happen in the future. Another common use of one’s psychic abilities is Remote Viewing defined as “the ability to perceive, through a projection of consciousness, objects, both animate and ina- nimate, people, and events distant in time and space”. This process was widely used by Western Intelligence during the “Cold War”, the extent of which recently became public due to the declassification of secret files from that era. In the US, military intelligence became aware that the Soviet Union was using psy- chics to spy on US military bases. The Soviet Union had for some years accepted psychic phenomena and for a number of years had ac- tively recruited and trained psychics. During the 1970’s the CIA, Air Force, and Army In- telligence contracted with Science Research Institute (SRI) in Palo Alto California, to de- velop a programme that would use psychics to identify specific activities and events in the Soviet Union using Remote Viewing. SRI already had an active programme unde- rway in the field of Remote Viewing and had recruited some of the top psychics of the day. They had remarkable success with their new contract. One of their psychics, Pat Price, an ex-police commissioner, correctly identified the contents and activities inside and outside a Soviet weapons laboratory in Siberia, having been given only the geographic co-ordinates of the site. The information that he provided was so accurate that it led to a formal congres- sional investigation to determine if there had been a breach of national security! Jose Silva, the founder of the Silva Method, discovered early in his research, back in the 1940s, that psychic ability was not some- thing confined to a few gifted people. He discovered, and later proved scientifically, that psychic ability is a natural talent we all have and it can be developed, just like any other skill, with the right training. The Silva Method Programme, which is the foundation for the other courses that he developed, faci- litates the development of this natural talent through a series of exercises using dynamic meditation and visualisation. By the end of the programme, participants have developed their Remote Viewing capability – that is they are able to perceive information about anima- te and inanimate objects at a distance in time and space. SRI later used similar exercises to those taught in the Silva Method Programme to train psychics. One of the best applications of this ability to perceive information at a distance is called Remote Influencing or Distant Healing. Here the psychic focuses on a “case” – normally a person who is experiencing health challenges – and having identified the issue in question, sends healing energy to the person concerned, seeing them in perfect health. The scienti- fic community has extensively researched the field of Distant Healing over the past 30 years. The overall conclusion? It works! Jose Silva, who himself was a gifted healer, researched the field of psychic and distant healing for more that 40 years. The culmi- nation of his research is the Silva UltraMind ESP Programme, which focuses on deve- loping your ESP abilities, influencing healing in others at a distance, and getting guidance from “Higher Intelligence” to help define your purpose and direction in Life. Dr. Denis Prone and Dr. Alma D. Quinones- Prone co-teach the Silva Method Programme and the Silva UltraMind ESP Programme in Dublin and Cork. HOW TO LOOK AND FEELTEN YEARS YOUNGER WITHOUT DRUGSOR SURGERY… By Cathal Spelman 26,
You have seventy five trillion (75,000,000,000,000) amazing cells in your body, all working together in harmony. Your body produces seven million (7,000,000) new blood cells every second! You are as healthy as the cells in your body. And your cells are as healthy as the food that you eat. You have a perfect (genetic) blueprint to be healthy and full of life. But most of the building materials, our modern food, is rubbish. Unfortunately, our bodies will have to use the materials that we supply through the food we eat. After all, your body has to produce seven million new red blood cells every second of every day! So your body will just use the availa- ble materials. That is where the trouble begins. You cannot build a healthy living vibrant body from food that is dead. And most modern food is dead. All forms of cooking destroys the cell struc- ture of the food. We take even good ingre- dients, but we boil, bake, roast, and toast it into something un-natural and harmful. The easy solution is to eat food in its natural state. That’s why I teach the living green foods lifestyle. Living green foods are the most natural and beneficial foods of all. This includes fresh green vegetables, and also home grown sprouted seeds, and wheatgrass. The benefits you will enjoy are that your body will finally get the nutrients it has been craving, and in the correct proportions. And most importantly, this is in a water rich food that is naturally mild and free from the extremes of concentrated cooked and processed foods. And remember, the cells of this food are in a pristine state, ready to provide everything your body needs to create a healthy you. Carbohydrates: You will get natural car- bohydrates, in a water rich slow release format. Perfect for sustained energy. Fats: You get an ample supply in the best of fatty acids in the correct proportion, and easy to digest. Proteins: You need amino acids to make human protein. The living green food contains ample amounts of high quality amino acids. Vitamins and minerals: You get all the vitamins and minerals that you need from this type of food PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS: To get started right away with healthy living foods, simply make half your plate green with fresh leafy green foods at every meal. Put a delicious fresh dressing on top, and enjoy! To make it even better, learn how to grow your own sprouted seeds and whea- tgrass so that you can have your own living chlorophyll rich food in your kitchen every day of the year! Here’s a delicious fresh Italian dressing you can make in your blender to go with your living green food: Italian Dressing 1 Cup olive oil 1½ C tomatoes 6 teaspoons lemon juice 3-4 Dessert spoons nama shoyu, or tamari sauce, (or salt to taste) 2 Dessert spoons honey 2 teaspoon Italian herbs mix (a mix of basil, thyme, oregano, and garlic) pinch of asafetida or one clove garlic www.realhealthylifestyle.com cathal@realhealthylifestyle.com 045 401800 Cathal teaches how to live a healthy lifestyle that works, at demos around the country. You can organize one in your home for any group bigger than 8 people. You can also attend regular training days to get hands on experience of how to prepare the living green foods.
THE Irish Health Trade Association (IHTA) represents the interests of ma- nufacturers, importers and distributors of specialist health products. These products include vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal medicines, homeopathic medicines, flower remedies, natural body care products and health foods. The IHTA is a member of the European Health Product Manufacturers’ Association (EHPM) and works closely with the EHPM to protect and nurture the industry’s inte- rests across Europe. It also works closely with the Irish Association of Health Stores (IAHS) and the UK Health Food Manufac- turers’ Association (HFMA). Recent times have presented a number of obstacles to the specialist health pro- ducts sector. Three of the greatest obsta- cles are: • EU legislative and regulatory develop- ments •Widespread distorted, negative repor- ting in the media •A lack of acceptance by the allopathic (conventional) medical community for the use of such products in health care Three of the legislative obstacles are: the Food Supplements Directive, the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation, and the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Pro- ducts Directive. The Food Supplements Directive (FSD) aims to harmonise laws relating to food sup- plements for the purpose of facilitating free trade of food supplements within the EU, while also protecting consumer health. In the near future, it will be amended to limit both maximum and minimum daily dosages of vitamins and minerals in food supple- ment products across the EU. It is possible that the ‘maximum permit- ted levels’ of vitamins and minerals will be set so low that they will be less than the levels currently available from popular hi- gher potency supplements. The FSD will eventually also be applied to supplements containing other groups of nutrients. The IHTA and other trade associations are wor- king hard to help ensure the continued availability of safe, beneficial higher poten- cy supplements. The Nutrition and Health Claims Regu- lation (NHCR) applies to foods (and food supplements). It aims to harmonise nutri- tion and health claims made on labels and in advertising throughout the EU. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is currently evaluating claims and when the approved list is published, companies will be required to alter their current claims to those that use an approved claim for a speci- fic generic ingredient. No product specific claims will be al- lowed unless they have been approved. The NHCR has the potential to cripple small and medium sized enterprises becau- se product-specific claims applications are excessively onerous and require evidence from randomised clinical trials (RCTs). RCTs are prohibitively costly to carry out and lack relevance for foods or food ingre- dients with many years of safe use. The Traditional Herbal Medicinal Pro- ducts Directive (THMPD) relates to tra- ditional herbal products, substances and preparations. In some EU Member States, there is a high risk that many botanicals that may rightfully be considered as bo- tanicals under the EU food supplement regime may be categorized as ‘herbal me- dicinal products’. Under the THMPD, products are sub- ject to pharmaceutical stability testing and significant compliance costs apply. This will place a huge financial burden on small and medium sized enterprises. It will also make the cost of products that have complied, too expensive for some consumers, thereby li- miting their right to choose with regard to decisions about their own healthcare. If you would like more information about the IHTA, please contact Phil Costigan at the IHTA Secretariat: Ph: +353 1 2860377 E-mail: info@ihta.org 28 The Irish Health Trade Association WORKING TO PROTECT THE SPECIALIST HEALTH PRODUCTS SECTOR By Dr.Alan Ruth, CEO of the IHTA

THE many reported benefits of Reiki include a reducing of stress, an increase in energy levels and a boosting of the immune system. Hospitals, nursing homes, health spas and an increasing number of work places are now offering Reiki. This gentle healing art re-energises the mind, body and emotions by focusing energy back to the areas where we need it the most. The two ways to experience Reiki are to learn how to use Reiki on yourself by attending a Reiki workshop or by visiting a Reiki practitioner for a Reiki treatment. Many studies have been done in prestigious hospitals in the USA and Canada that highlight the benefits of Reiki. The Columbian Presbyterian Hospital in New York has used Reiki practitioners in their operating room while patients have undergone heart surgery. Speakers at the Irish National Reiki Conference, organised by Reiki Federa- tion Ireland in 2007, included Deirdre Ruane, clinical nurse specialist in complementary therapies at St. Francis Hos- pice Raheny. She carried out a study of the perceived benefits of Reiki amongst patients who had never received comple- mentary therapies before. The feedback was encouraging. They said it was very relaxing, it gave them more energy and there was a strong feel good factor. Quantum physics goes a long way to explain energy healing practices such as Reiki. At an atomic level, every- thing that exists in the universe vibrates energy. The normal biological frequencies of the human body are around 250Hz (cycles per second.) When tests were carried out on people who used healing energies such as Reiki, it was found that body frequency registered in a more beneficial band between 400 Hz and 800Hz. Reiki Federation Ireland is a national organisation promo- ting high standards of Reiki practice and training. If you would like to find a Reiki practitioner in your area or if you are interested in joi- ning Reiki Federation Ireland visit:www.reikifederationire- land.com or contact the RFI membership secretary at 087 981 9366. 30 Time for Reiki REIKI IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING METHODS OF COMPLEMENTARY HEALING AND STRESS REDUCTION IN THE WORLD AND MANY IRISH PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING TO LEARN REIKI FOR THEMSELVES.

The Power of aHug “LOVEis the only medicine that can heal the wounds of the world.”, says Amma, known to many as the ‘Hugging Saint’. Speaking to a journalist while holding an elderly lady in her arms, she continues, “There are two kinds of poverty in this world. One is financial, the other is due to a lack of love. This second kind is more basic. Love is what sustains life, it nou- rishes the entire being.” Offering this nourishment without exception to everyone in the form of a simple hug, Amma seems to have tapped into a deep, essential human need. Whe- rever she goes, people queue up in their thousands to receive her embrace. Knowing Amma for over a decade and having witnessed her countless acts of love and compassion, it is difficult to hold back my admiration. To simply watch Amma greet every person for hours and hours on end with the same unconditional love can be a powerful experience. While it might be difficult for the mind to grasp why she is doing this – hugging people, day after day, year after year, an estimated 27 million in the past 3 deca- des – something deep in the heart spon- taneously responds. A shell breaks open, frequently resulting in unexpected tears. “It is as if many people have forgotten an old song”, Amma says, “and I try to help them remember it: the song of love, the language of the heart.” While hugging is the trademark that made Amma famous around the globe, there is more to this tiny, unassuming woman with the radiant smile. In recent years she emerged as one of the greatest humanitarians of our time, spearheading an ever-expanding charitable network, probably the biggest ever initiated by a single woman. Accredited ‘Special Consultative Status’ by the United Nations, her mission helps millions of people in need, regardless of religion or social class. Apart from deploying massive disaster relief efforts, Amma has – amongst countless other projects – foun- ded hospitals and clinics, pension sche- mes, schools and colleges, adult training centres, and even built entire villages for those most in need. She spreads her message through the example of her own life, rather than through words, and the utter devotion with which she lives that example is ins- piring people of all walks of life to join hands in the service of humanity. At her 50th birthday celebration in 2003, the President of India, together with other politicians, business leaders and religious leaders of all faiths joined in a prayer for world peace and pledged to support her endeavours. To many, to be in Amma’s presence is simply to experience the best that life has to offer. Amma visits Dublin the 19th and 20th November 2008. (please check www.ammaireland.org closer to the time to confirm dates). National Show Centre, Swords Road, Cloghran, Co. Dublin (1km from Airport). Open from 10 am until late. Info: help@am- maireland.org, or ring Mary on 01-6276060 (between 6-9pm) Admission and personally mee- ting Amma is free. 34
