MARCH 2010 THE GIRL WITH THEDRAGON TATTOO
1 EXHIBITPRESERVEEDUCATE The Irish Film Institute is Ireland’s national cultural institution for film. It aims to exhibit the finest in independent, Irish and international cinema, preserve Ireland’s moving image heritage at the Irish Film Archive, and encourage engagement with film through its various educational programmes. THE IRISHFILM INSTITUTE All of our brand new menus are now up and running, with new options for lunch and dinner, alongside our all-new Sunday brunch and tapas menus. The IFI is always delighted to present the finest in new Irish filmmaking, and in March we will be continuing this initiative with Ivan Kavanagh’s new feature, The Fading Light (see page 8). The director and cast will participate in a panel discussion on Saturday March 13th at 4pm. The event is free but ticketed. Earlier in the day, we will present Ivan’s previous feature Our Wonderful Home at 2.30pm. We’ll also be offering audiences the opportunity to see the three Oscar-nominated Irish films with a special screening on March 3rd at 6.30pm (see page 16 for details). We’ll be continuing our recent screenings for third level students, offering a discounted €5 ticket at a special screening of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on March 22nd (8.00). Tickets are available in person at the IFI Box Office on presentation of a valid student card. In conjunction with the National Film School at IADT, this month we are presenting four classic Hollywood films that are essential viewing for any film fan. 2 DIRECTOR’S NOTE FEBRUARYAT THE IFI We wouldn’t be able to offer such a rich and diverse programme without you, the audience and, as we face into a year of significantly reduced public funding, the continued support of our audience and membership is of critical importance to us. The IFI Membership offers a great chance to both support the IFI and see films for less! For those of you who aren’t already members, please do check out the huge range of benefits it offers, and to those of you who are – thank you! Sarah Glennie Director Welcome to the IFI’s March programme and the return of anime to the IFI! DIRECTOR’S NOTE After last year’s sell-out event we are delighted to be working with the Japanese Embassy to bring back the IFI Anime Weekend with a bigger programme of six screenings, two workshops and number of talks and discussions. With three Irish premieres, the weekend promises to captivate anime experts and novices alike. Oscar season is upon us and we are celebrating the nomination of three Irish films with a special screening on March 3rd of The Secret of Kells, The Door and Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty, giving you a chance to see the films yourself before the big night, as well as the three Oscar contenders amongst our new releases, A Single Man, Crazy Heart and The Last Station. As ever we have the best of new cinema from around the world amongst our new releases. The much-anticipated Swedish thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and stand-out Argentinean prison-drama Lion’s Den, both open during the month. The work of rising Irish talent, cinematographer Robbie Ryan (Fish Tank, Red Road), can be seen in The Scouting Book for Boys which brings together some of the UK’s most exciting new talents with actor Thomas Turgoose (This is England) and Skins writer Jack Thorne. One of my personal highlights from Cannes, No One Knows About Persian Cats gives an extraordinarily compelling and moving portrait of youth and creativity in Tehran. Unexpected and illuminating, I would strongly recommend it. Horror fans have a treat with a special premiere on March 2nd of 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams, the follow up to 2001 Maniacs. The director, Tim Sullivan, and actresses Christa Campbell (2001 Maniacs and Lonely Hearts) and Kathryn Le (Valentine’s Day) will all be attending the screening. We also have a rare opportunity to see Ariane Mnouchkine’s 1978 four-hour masterpiece about the life of the prodigious and universal author, Molière, on March 21st. 5 MARCH 2010NEW RELEASES (LA MUJER SIN CABEZA) FILM INFO: 87 minutes, Argentina- France-Italy-Spain, 2008, Subtitled, Colour, Anamorphic Digital Notes by Trevor Johnston MAR 1ST-4THArgentine writer-director Lucrecia Martel, long regarded among the most promising new voices in world cinema, takes a significant step forward with this exquisitely rendered cinematic puzzle. Produced by Pedro Almodóvar, it’s the mesmerising portrait of a bottle-blonde woman of a certain age who can’t quite put herself back together again after she runs over something – maybe someone? – on the drive home. She’s not exactly clear on who or what she hit, yet ever since the incident she can’t really be sure of anything. Martel trusts the audience to pay attention to the telling micro-details painstakingly revealed in the course of events, but she rewards us with a brilliantly unsettling vision of disconnected lives in a country where class divisions and a dark political history lurk just behind the everyday. Justified comparisons with Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Antonioni’s L’avventura give some idea of her accomplishment. FILM INFO: 100 minutes, U.S.A., 2009, Colour, Anamorphic, Dolby Digital Stereo, 35mm Notes by Trevor Johnston MAR 1ST-11THThe finest performance of Colin Firth’s career illuminates this affecting adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s early ’60s novel about an English professor adrift in Los Angeles after the loss of his long-time male companion. The name of writer-director Tom Ford, perhaps new to cineastes, will be familiar to dedicated followers of haute couture. He makes an impressive transition from catwalk to silver screen with this story about a man determined to maintain a fastidiously elegant appearance while underneath his heart is in tatters. Although Ford’s eye for the era’s Southern California cool-school design cossets Firth’s personal crisis amid a milieu of truly swoonsome allure, the performers remain the centre of attention. Julianne Moore’s boozy confidante offers a touching vignette of self-deception, but it’s Firth’s uncanny rendering of George Falconer’s sardonic wit and quintessential English reserve as he wonders how to persevere in a world without love which makes this chic, sincere film compellingly truthful as well. A SINGLE MAN THE HEADLESS WOMAN
6 FILM INFO: 112 minutes, Germany-Russia- U.K., 2009, Colour, Digital Notes by Trevor Johnston MAR 1ST-11THA stellar cast and genuinely fascinating subject matter make this fictionalised account of the final days of the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy an engrossing watch. Since the year is 1910, it’s almost surprising to see the great man (a suitably imposing Christopher Plummer) treated as a multi-media celebrity, yet reporters and newsreel cameramen dog his steps, covering the ongoing dispute between Sofya (Helen Mirren), his wife of some 46 years, and the Tolstoyan political movement that’s contesting the valuable publishing rights for War and Peace. Each side seeks to use Tolstoy’s new secretary (James McAvoy) to discover what the old man’s really thinking, yet the elderly author is just as interested in this earnest young man’s romantic misadventures. The ensuing ructions are as much farce as tragedy, as the seasoned performers relish the theatricality of the occasion, while the film engagingly illustrates the fine line between heartfelt passion and sheer bloody-mindedness. THE LASTSTATION FILM INFO: 112 minutes, U.S.A., 2009, Colour, Digital Notes by Peter Walsh MAR 1ST-11THA wonderful performance from the now 60-year-old Jeff Bridges is the main attraction of this affecting portrait of an ageing country musician whose career is on the skids. Adapted from Thomas Cobb’s novel by first-time director Scott Cooper, Crazy Heart looks as though it might have been conceived as a worthy vehicle for Bridges’ considerable talents. He plays ‘Bad’ Blake, a washed-up singer-songwriter who just about keeps his act together to perform in dismal bars across the American southwest. Decades of alcohol abuse and four marriages have taken their toll, but Blake prides himself on never having missed a gig, even if he sometimes has to leave the stage to be sick. He’s on a familiar course to self-destruction, but can he find redemption in the arms of a journalist and single mom (a radiant Maggie Gyllenhaal) who falls for him? Happily, the film eschews a sentimental ending in favour of a more realistic depiction of a mature man struggling with his demons. CRAZY HEART
7 MARCH 2010NEW RELEASES (LE PÈRE DE MES ENFANTS) FILM INFO: 110 minutes, Germany-France, 2009, Subtitled, Colour, Digital Notes by Trevor Johnston MAR 5TH-25THWhat starts as a tribute to a hero of the European art film becomes an affecting meditation on the pursuit of happiness in this hauntingly beautiful offering from writer- director Mia Hansen-Løve. Although the character’s called Grégoire, the shamblingly charismatic Louis-Do de Lencquesaing plays an unfailingly enthused, financially doomed producer obviously modelled on the late Humbert Balsan. For a while, we’re hooked by the film’s brutally honest depiction of the sharp end of independent cinema, but as worries begin to weigh more heavily, the focus shifts to the long-suffering wife (Alice Gautier) who’s obviously wondering, like us, whether this masculine rage to build a legacy is actually depriving her and her kids of much of a life in the meantime. Hansen-Løve’s methods are subtle, but her sun-dappled visuals and seemingly low- key storytelling combine with the wholly believable performances to work their way under our skin, leaving us moved and perhaps reflecting on the balance in our own lives. French Film Club screening Mar 23rd (8.40). See www.ifi.ie. THE FATHER OFMY CHILDREN (MICMACS À TIRE-LARIGOT) FILM INFO: 105 minutes, France, 2009, Subtitled, Colour, Anamorphic, Dolby Digital Stereo, 35mm Notes by Peter Walsh MAR 1ST-25THAmélie director Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s new film combines his patented whimsy and visual inventiveness with a satirical treatment of the international arms trade. Comedian Dany Boon (a megastar following the phenomenon that was Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis/Welcome to the Sticks) plays Bazil, a video shop clerk who gets a non- fatal bullet in his brain during a drive-by shooting. Taken in by the Micmacs, seven misfits living in a secret lair under a rubbish dump, he discovers that one of two rival Parisian arms dealers manufactured the bullet that hit him. Bazil plans revenge and is aided and abetted by his incredibly resourceful new friends. Although some commentators have claimed that the subject of arms trading grounds the film in contemporary reality, Micmacs, like Jeunet’s earlier films (Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children) is a fable that looks and sounds like a live action cartoon. It’s surely no accident that Jeunet himself has cited Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a major influence. MICMACS IFI IRISH SHORTSThis screening includes Jamie Hannigan’s IFB-funded animation The Boy With the Ever Open Jaw, a tale of a boy who gains wisdom as he tries to mend his broken heart. 3 minutes.
8 (MÄN SOM HATAR KVINNOR) FILM INFO: 152 minutes, Sweden- Denmark-Germany, 2009, Subtitled, Colour, Anamorphic, Dolby Digital Stereo, 35mm Notes by Nigel Floyd FROM MAR 12THFor fans of Wallander, this shockingly gruesome crime thriller plays like an epic episode of the original Swedish TV series pumped up on steroids. A surprisingly faithful adaptation of the first book in Stieg Larsson’s phenomenally successful Millennium crime novel trilogy, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo teams disgraced political journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) with fierce, anti-social Goth girl Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace). Mikael’s dogged researching skills and Lisbeth’s astonishing facility for computer hacking combine to great effect as the mismatched pair investigates the mysterious disappearance, forty years before, of an ageing industrialist’s beloved great-niece. Dark familial secrets, sadistic violence and surprising deceptions crawl out of the dark Scandinavian woodwork, like woodworms gnawing away at your soul. A little too plot-heavy, perhaps, but director Niels Arden Oplev’s skilful use of photographic and computer imagery lends the complex details a very modern look and feel. Intelligent, disturbing and compelling in equal measure. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO FILM INFO: 71 minutes, Ireland, 2009, Colour, Digital Notes by Manus McManus MAR 12TH-18THA study of a family in crisis, Ivan Kavanagh’s fifth feature is an intense affair, by turns touching, fierce and chilling. Returning home to their widowed and dying mother, two estranged daughters become reacquainted with a house of difficult memories. Their brother, disabled and dependent, faces an uncertain future, and his predicament tests the sisters’ affection and empathy. The turmoil created by the approach of death intensifies the relationships, and an already fragmented family slides towards disintegration. There are moments of reprieve, when a straightforward kind of love seems possible; and Kavanagh’s editing offers glimpses of peace, particularly in the final stages of the mother’s agonising illness. Shot with a lucid intimacy by Kavanagh’s regular cinematographer, Colin Downey, the film also boasts brilliant performances from a cast which includes Valene Kane, Emma Eliza Regan, Bibi Larrson and Patrick O’Donnell. Presented in association with Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board. THE FADING LIGHT IFI IRISH SHORTSIvan Kavanagh’s earlier feature Our Wonderful Home (2008) screens at 2.30 on Saturday March 13th. Following that there will be a discussion (free but ticketed) with the director and cast at 4.00. IFI STUDENTSSpecial discounted screening for third level students on Mar 22nd, 8.00. Tickets €5.
9 MARCH 2010NEW RELEASES FROM MAR 26THThis undercover portrait of rock musicians in Tehran is both a courageous statement of artistic liberty and scintillating cinema in its own right. Stymied by delays in getting official approval for his work, Kurdish-born director Bahman Ghobadi (whose previous features Turtles Can Fly and A Time for Drunken Horses have been lauded worldwide) simply took up his camera, got on his moped and started shooting a story about an indie-pop duo trying to buy fake passports and thence realise their dream of playing in London. Trouble is, they need a permit to put on a gig to raise the cash in the first place, and since Western music’s essentially forbidden by the Islamic régime, the threat of arrest hangs over the underground community of musicians who come to their aid. There’s more fact than fiction involved as duplicity and desperation intensify in this soberingly truthful, intensely compelling film. Little wonder many of those we see have since fled Iran. (KASI AZ GORBEHAYEIRANI KHABAR NADAREH) FILM INFO: 107 minutes, Iran, 2009, Subtitled, Colour, Digital Notes by Trevor Johnston NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PERSIAN CATS FILM INFO: 93 minutes, U.K., 2009, Colour, Digital Notes by Trevor Johnston FROM MAR 19THMore growing pains for This Is England and Somers Town star Thomas Turgoose in this vivid rites of passage tale set in an out-of-season English caravan park. His gawky teen David has been hanging out with Holliday Grainger’s Emily since they were little kids, but fear of rejection and a worry it’ll end their friendship means he can’t quite bring himself to tell her just how much he fancies her. The first feature script from Jack Thorne, who cut his teeth on TV’s youth shocker Skins, carefully orchestrates the escalating tensions when Grainger gets her first serious boyfriend and the distressed Turgoose’s every move only makes matters worse. Here’s a story which really captures the snap volatility of adolescent emotions, with Fish Tank cinematographer Robbie Ryan’s evocative work again drawing expressive impact from the naturalistic settings. The young leads barely put a foot wrong, while there’s seasoned support from Susan Lynch as a boozy white-trash mum to be reckoned with. THE SCOUTING BOOK FOR BOYS
10 FROM MAR 26THSceptical but never scornful, solemn but never over-reverent, this story of the hopeful travelling to the French pilgrimage site proves a masterclass in intriguing ambiguity. That the church authorities offered Austrian writer-director Jessica Hausner permission to film in these sensitive locations is one indication of her seriousness of intent. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this haunting film, however, is the way it ponders issues of faith and the miraculous while drawing on cinematic sources as diverse as Hitchcockian suspense and the sly choreographed wit of Jacques Tati. Gamine Sylvie Testud is utterly mesmerising as the Multiple Sclerosis sufferer whose life, it’s fair to say, will be changed forever by a group trip supervised by nursing volunteers from the Order of Malta. Undoubtedly alert to the essential strangeness of the Lourdes experience, Hausner’s approach also tellingly relates our essential longing for healing and change to both faithful and non-believers alike. Thought-provoking and hypnotically involving, it’s a celluloid miracle in itself. FILM INFO: 96 minutes, Austria-France- Germany, 2009, Subtitled, Colour Notes by Trevor Johnston LOURDES (LEONERA) FILM INFO: 113 minutes, Argentina-South Korea-Brazil, 2008, Subtitled, Colour, Digital Notes by Trevor Johnston FROM MAR 26THForget all those clichés about women- in-prison movies, this Argentine saga of motherhood behind bars tells a story of resilience and hope rather than repression and exploitation. Martina Gusman’s staggering central performance traces a dramatic personal journey for a dissolute young woman who wakes up in a blood- splattered Buenos Aires flat, finds herself on trial for murder, and has her son while serving time – only then does the realisation the authorities can take her child away instil in her a new sense of purpose. In a Hollywood movie, this would be odds-on Oscar material, but few American actresses would make their own pregnancy part of the storyline, or could indeed manifest the tigerish resolve required in these raw, uncompromising surroundings. Directed with an unfailing eye for emotional and visual authenticity by Gusman’s partner, leading Argentine auteur Pablo Trapero, this is a powerful statement that the worst of circumstances can succour fierce courage and deep humanity. LION’S DEN
IFI ANIMEWEEKEND 11 The IFI is delighted to present our second Anime Weekend. Japanese anime has sat at the forefront of animation for many years, engaging adults, teenagers and children from across the world, from the sights of a ruined Tokyo in Akira to the enthralling work done by Studio Ghibli, most recently in Ponyo. Anime can portray outstanding concepts that would cost a lot more to do or simply would not work well in a live film, and this weekend is out to prove it. Time- travelling schoolgirls, giant robots protecting humanity, bittersweet romance and more at the IFI Anime Weekend! We will be joined throughout the weekend by Andrew Partridge and Hugh K. David who both have extensive experience of the anime industry, and Jonathan Clements, author of Schoolgirl Milky Crises: Adventures in the Anime and Manga Trade, and co-author of the Anime Encyclopedia. IFI Anime Weekend is organised with the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Foundation. IFI Anime Weekend programmed by Andrew Partridge.
